Oil filter rule
« on: January 19, 2015, 11:29:49 am »
Happily, no crazy new rules this year from USLC, but I just find it kind of silly that they have to add a new rule to the rulebook because people buy the wrong thread pitch oil filters.
8 years of dirt racing Legends, some of the tracks were like a freshly plowed farm field, and I never had an oil filter "back off".  ::)

Just a random observation after a Packers loss  :'(

At least there are no big surprises or expensive changes.

I wanted the motor claim rule back !

They think I am that dense that I need a hose clamp on my oil filter ?

Thanks a lot USLC

Catering to dorks... lets just call that one the idiot rule.

What's next a phone app so I can race Legends legally from my living room ?

Not all of us Legends Racers live in mommy's basement .... we have a clue from the real world

Now I have to add a clamp to my oil filter because dense NOOBS don't know how to install an oil filter ?

That's ghey right there... Making me put a hose clamp and wire on my filter because some fool can't install an oil filter ?

So if some NOOB craps in their pants while racing and leaves huge bacon strips  in their shorts while racing is it going to be mandatory that we ALL wear Pampers under our race suits too ??

(We are not all Seahawk fans, ya know...) we have a clue

Gimp,

Some do not know the pitch of the threads on the oil filter. I have heard vetran drivers have this issue. Ya, a pain; But a cheap and easy job.
At least this series does not require every not and bolt be safety wired.

The way the rule is written even Hank's 2 stage system would need a hose clamp and safety wire too... lemme find a link or a picture but it is a remote system....

Not legal for INEX (I don't think); But I am still going to use my Oberg filter for my cars. Clean the screen and it's a done deal! No canisters and easy to clean. Nothing to come loose. Granted, they are a bit pricey compared to some other aftermarket systems. I have them; So going to use them.

I left a message on RRC's facebook page instead of bothering Hankster with a call... the rules state
 Legend Cars:
 Remote oil filter systems must have a hose clamp around the oil filter, safety wired to
the mount (to prevent the oil filter from backing off).

This is a remote system and how the hell do ya get a hoes clamp to hold around that ?? lol

MAKE THE NEWBS USE DUCT TAPE !!

In all fairness, Gimp, I have run my team from my Mommy's basement twice since I've been racing and had quite a bit of success.

This rule won't save people from themselves.  Most of the time when a filter backs off its because the old gasket was left on.  It's not a bad idea but I don't see the necessity of making it a rule.  Oh well.  Their ballgame.

It's a $2.00 fix. Perfect? No. But it may help some. Really is a non-issue and should be done anyhow.
A lot of race series require anything that can back off to be safety wired (nuts, bolts, filters, etc...).

Yeah, my boil is simmering but still..they make it a rule ?

Like Jim said, he has raced disced- up pastures for 8 years and never lost a filter like the rest of us haven't lost one.

There has to be a better way than make the rest of us bang our friggin heads against the wall.

They are a hero though.. they could have changed the filter mount and thread design to a filter that no other filter has threads even close to it, and made us buy an entire mount kit

Better yet, they could abandon the spin on concept and make Hank's remote system mandatory ..bam problem solved

I suggest everyone out there nab one of Hank's oil filter systems anyway to be on top of the game

Jim,
It IS a good point to bring up. This is a lot less expense than some of the rules in the recent past.
Might help some who have had this issue in the past.

Am I missing what the big deal about this rule is? its a 2 dollar 2 minute job lol.  Is it needed no, but its a safety issue so that's why they're doing it.
