Cost to build a stock 1200 to a racing built 1200
« on: October 26, 2010, 02:50:45 pm »
If I bought a stock 1200 and sent it to an engine builder to be built to a racing engine, what cost (ballpark) would I be looking at?

thanks

It all will really depend on what needs to be replaced.  You could be anywhere from rings and bearings, to new pistons, sleeves, etc.  You might want to have them provide a quote before they start the rebuild to see if the engine is worth it. If you search through the previous posts, I think that people had touched on this one before in more detail.

Average rebuild with new clutch, bearings, seals, etc. through my shop is around $3500, but it does depend on what you are looking for.  I prefer to replace starter and timing chains, etc. while its apart, otherwise you're looking less money. Can be much higher or lower depending on what you want done. Headwork, pistons, upgrades, etc. of course will raise the price.

Best to assume a minimum of $2000 and plan for a phone call when it's apart to discuss options, at least thats how we work.

Feel free to call me if you have any specific questions

And no, I won't build a "cheater" motor, so don't ask.  :)
If my name is on it, it's legal.
Amazing how many people inquire about lightening cranks and such.

3500 is the ball park that most builders will tell you to take a stock bike motor and make it race ready.  Also IF the motor is a race " built" motor , and does not have a hole in it,  just needs to be freshened it SHOULD be around 2500
