Best spray paint for chassis..
« on: November 10, 2013, 09:20:13 am »
Gonna get the frame redone, and am gonna paint it as long as it is apart.   What are others experiences with painting.  Was planning on spray paint, what have you guys used that worked well and held up well over the season?

I realize powder coating is best, but figured I'd save some money for "go fast" stuff instead of paint/powder coating.

Thanks for any help.

Be prepared for a hell of a mess, lol. We have a place here that will blast it clean and powder coat for around 300.00. I found by the time we fooled with sanding, primer and paint combined with the mess the powder made more sense. Of course if you don't have this available its tough. I know some of the fab shops that do chassis have powder available. What they charge I am not sure.

yes it does make a mess spraying round tubes..have used trailer paint [emron] not inpressed... spray bombs can be touched up easy....I put chassis saver on the underside this year held up great.. I would not do the whole frame in this though..

Anybody ever try to brush on paint?   Don't need a show quality finish, just want something durable that will do the job..... But would like it to look half way decent.

Tractor Suppy, Big R, or any other farm supply place. Dirt cheap (no pun intended) and last a whole season.

I use engine paint because it holds up to the oil and degreaser we use a lot better.

I've brushed on Rustoleum paints for years and never had a problem or a mess.  They are readily available at your local Walmart and Menard's stores.  I use a very small amount of mineral spirits to thin this paint if needed and as long you're patient and don't try to put too much on at once, runs will be minimal and it will give you a nice finish.  Gets me thru the season no problem, and I race on dirt with lovely stones... ;D

Nate,

Spray paint will work fine. I have done it several times. That said, I had my car sandblasted and powder coated last winter for $450. When I took the car apart last month, All I had to do was wipe it down with purple power and it looks just as good as when I picked it up from the powder coater.

The probelm with spray paint is that over the years, you will add POUNDS of paint to the car. If you get it sandblasted first, then that helps, but at that point, you might as well get it powdercoated.

If you are going to go with spray paint, the best option is to go to NAPA and get a single stage automotive paint, and spray it with a automotive sprayer. I did this with my backup car, and it worked very well. Much more durable than rattle can...
