Oil Drain Plug Stripped
« on: August 20, 2008, 09:16:35 am »
What size is the thread on the oil drain plug?  Mine just pulled out and I see the "spare" oil pan I got with the car is stripped to.  Has anyone else been able to heli-coil the hole or should I weld it up and retap it?

Thanks

No experience with this particular issue, but just for piece of mind and from past unrelated experiences with heli-coil, I'd weld it up and re-tap it...just my 2 cents tho...

The threads are 14x1.50. Over the years, since 1994, I have probably installed heli-coil thread repairs into 100 different oil pans. I have never had another issue once the heli-coil has been installed.

Thanks Randy, I am a big fan of Heli Coils.  I use them a lot at work and home and never have had an issue when done properly.

I was a service manager in my previous life, and had enough failures with stripped out spark plug threads, Im always leery...of course maybe it was the technicians not installing the heli coil correctly...like I said, no experience with oil pans...

In a pinch I did a quick fix with JB weld , It kept me racing that weekend .I also had to change my oil twice that weekend  because my carb was pissing raw fuel and fouling the oil. I did however instal a heli coil later. I find that guys that have problems with heli coils don't read the instuctions Ive long ago stoped listening to my dad when he contadicts the manufactures instuctions saying things like" this is the way we always did it "
THE MANUFACTUR DOES NO MORE ABOUT THERE PRODUCT THAN ME OR  MY DAD. Ive also used rubber oil plugs that install with a special tool found it at canadian tire  it worked on my pickup.

I ended up Heli-Coiling my pan and my spare pan with no issues, works great.

Got to the auto parts store and ask for a self taping drain plug, they have them just for this reason, we have replaced two at the shop this way, never had a problem again.
