Tool thread....
« on: June 13, 2008, 10:57:55 pm »
What new tool/tools have you bought this race season?

The last couple weeks I've bought a Moroso tire pressure gauge, manual tire changer from Northern Tool + Equipment, a 300CFM fan from Northern and a tire spoon.....Northern Tool had free shipping if you spent $149.99 or more.

If this thread can get enough interest from other members maybe it could become a sticky.

Later,
Al

I bought a wheel straightening tool and a coil-over adjusting wrench off eBay.
No big purchases as of late.

Bought a tire pyrometer (TIF7050), set of Craftsman pry bars (never know when you might need them), and a set of Craftsman screwdrivers (a lot of mine seemed to grow legs and walked out of my tool box). My brother gave me a 6 drawer tool chest. Wish he would give me his new roll around.  ;D

MIG welder from Harbor Freight, broken tap remover, metric tools (if only the rest of the world would just give up and use standard measurements  ;)), comp. gauge adapter, leak down tester, carb balancer, paint spray gun, more metric stuff.

John,
Is that the little 110v welder? I was looking at one of those for tacking stuff together and light work. My welding skills aren't so great, so was looking for a wire fed or something that would be easier to use.
As for metric tools............... Gotta get with the times my friend! Even the Fords and Chevys are metric these days. I have complete sets of both metric and SAE. Kind of a must have these days.
What kind of carb balancer did you get? Have you tried it out yet?

How will kids learn fractions if standard measurements go away?  This is a national security issue.   :)

I got the Morgan Carbtune that was mention here.  It looks like a pretty nice setup, but have to get my engine to stop shooting out black smoke before I can try it out.  They shipped it really quickly and the price was pretty good.  www.carbtune.com

I got the 170 amp 220 welder when Harbor Freight had it on sale.  Not sure if I would want to use a 110 volt welder on anything heavier like the chassis.  I had a 220 arc stick welder, and it was like trying to do detailed carving with a chainsaw.  The wire welder (no gas on it at the moment) is a little easier to use and does not melt holes through everything like the arc.

I broke down and bought myself a new set of Intercomp scales.  I figured that whenever I happen to sell out (no plans of that in the forseeable future), the scales would be easily saleable at a price close to what I paid for them.  I haven't done much playing with setup, but now that I have my own scales and can do it here at home I figure now will be the time to give a few things a try.

One more tool I just bought today is a torque wrench.  I have had a few nuts freeze up on my wheels so I have to bust them off.   Apparently I must be tightening them up too much, even though I don't feel that I am.  What would be the proper torque for a lug nut?

Thanks.

Congrats to everyone on there new tools/equipment.

Brian, I've been setting the torque wrench to 80 ft/lbs, I think I've read some have there's set at 75 ft/lbs.

I also ordered the 220 wire feed welder from Harbor freight, will do flux core or gas shielded, so i liked the flexibility, also the 220 for the duty cycle alone. I know the biggest issue with flux core is getting good penetration (insert 1970's porn music there) on thicker material, so the ability to switch to gas when needed is nice, and you can't beat their prices or shipping costs. Otherwise. just a cordless impact so i can give my friends back to him (halfway through the season) and a wheel straightener

I don't have 220; But you guys are right about the price. I'll have to see what I can do about the power situation.
