Need motor help
« on: May 14, 2008, 12:02:27 pm »
I just pumped my motor last night and it was right on the border for the new 165# rule. Yes it is worn out but it still pulls hard, at least it good for dirt racing. It wouldn't be much on asphalt. Is it a average of the four or if one is over 165# your "out for life" deal? Do you have to pump the motor hot for the tech guys or are you allowed to cool it? Thanks for any help.

I think it is at any time the motor can not be over, so the hot number would be higher. I have a fresh open motor "built", it it pump 165 or so cold, but let it run and warm up it pumps 180, 179, 178, 180.

The real number will be hot / warm all the plugs pulled and carbs wide open..

I have an open engine. I've been told about the rule but what are the sealed engines allowed to put out? 180 still?

I think the rule reads that a sealed can do 190!!!!, but they can not with the cams in the stock location.  Sealed motors are not allowed to have sloted cam gears so they can not get even close to that number.  We pumped all the cars last week and saw many sealed motors around 160ish.  There was one fresh sealed from the 600 shop that pumped just under 160 on all 4.  This was a zero race motor.  I dont think that the 165 rule will really hurt the local racer.  After 5 to 10 races the open motor will pump below anyway.

It doesnt matter what the 1250 pumps, this is not a forum to debate rules or politics.   :-X  Per Mike Callahan, the 1250's he's seen have a compression ratio of 10.20:1 with a cranking compression between 145-160psi. I have found nothing stating what the actual rule is for 1250's, but Im sure it is fair and reasonable, just like the new, sealed steering racks that will be mandatory possibly as soon as next year. It is all meant to level the playing field and save the racer some money.

We lowered our compression tonight. It was 180-177-175-175. After moving the intake cam it now blows at 167-165-163-164.
It is way to close to the rule but that is the box we were put in.
I have to thank Hank Scott for his help.

Well, mine pumped 160,150,150,167. I warmed it up for a about 5 or 10 minutes and then checked . I even put the car charger on it to crank harder. So I guess I'm good. I will tell you that this motor is 5 years old though and don't think that a fresh motor with 5 races will fall off that much. I'm ready to go racing and have fun. ;D
