Oil cooler air scoop?

I've seen an oil cooler air scoop on various sites for sale. Is this more of a asphalt thing? Would it just scoop up dirt and mud and cause more problems running on dirt tracks?

Yes, it is an asphalt thing. Not needed for dirt.
