Engine won't start
« on: September 01, 2016, 10:48:35 am »
Hi all,

I am new to the forum and to the legends world. I just purchased a used Legends car from a guy in CA and I currently live in AZ. I bought it about a month ago and it ran great. I have only taken it up and down my neighborhood a few times but I try and start it every few days so the oil and fuel don't sit. I tried starting it last night and it would turn over and sputter like it wanted to start but never actually fired up. I held the choke thinking this might help and it fired right up and ran for about 30 seconds then shut off and then wouldn't start again and was right back at it with the sputtering. I know almost nothing about these car and only have knowledge from a fuel injected dirt bike.

A little help would be much appreciated!

I should add it is a 1250 sealed and it only has two runs on it since it has been rebuilt form 600

Thanks again!

I would start with basic troubleshooting.

Fouled spark plug(s)
Plug wires
Intake manifold air leak
Contaminated (old) fuel
Check fuel cell foam
Check for blocked fuel cell vent
Obstructed fuel filter
Dirty/improper carb adjustments
Fuel pump
Fully charged battery
Bad ground or loose wiring
Ignition timing
Weak ignition unit
Weak ignition coil(s)
Valve clearance
Poor compression

That should give you plenty to look over. lol!
Hope you find your issue quickly. Please keep us updated as to what your cure is.

lol Thanks for the list!

I checked the plugs last night and they were wet (Flooded?) I let it sit for a while and checked them again and they were dry and they look almost brand new. Also, is the fuel pump suppose to run pretty loudly for an extended period of time? Thinking it might have been low on fuel i put some fresh fuel in and no luck either. I will check the carbs a little later today and see what I can find.

Thanks Steve!

Did you check the fuel cell foam before adding the new fuel?
Also check the fuel filter and vent.

I believe I found the problem. I pulled the fuel line from the carbs and no gas was coming out of it. I found  a crack in the fuel line that goes into the tank. I replaced it and all seems to be working well   :P

By the way, what are the proper starting procedures for these things anyway? Give it a little gas before you hit the starter button, pull the choke ect?
