Tow vehicle vs. trailer size question
« on: October 13, 2015, 06:57:20 pm »
So I want to upgrade to enclosed trailer.

The two I'm looking at is a 7x16 (2200lbs) and a 8.5x20 (3500lbs) . Both will be bumper towed.

I figure all said and done car plus equipment, tools, will be another 2500lbs.

My truck (2013 Chevy 1500 Z71)  has a 6400-6900 pound towing capacity. If I buy the 8.5x20 (which is what I really want)  I will very close to capacity. According to Chevy it will tow at capacity. I would like to hear it from someone who has sone it.

So the question is have any of you towed a similar weight with a 1/2 ton truck?

How did it tow?

I cant upgrade to 3/4 ton truck, this truck only has 20k on it.

I tow a 24' Pace that weighs about 3,600 lbs along with one Legends car with no issues. My truck is a 2015 Chevy Silverado Z71 1500 with a 5.3 motor. I would definitely recommend a weight distribution hitch and trailer brakes. This year I raced 5 or 6 times out of state comfortably.

I towed a 8.5 x 20 trailer with 2 go karts with supporting equipment and cabinets with a 2000 F-150. It did quite well excet going up hills, I just slowed down. The trailer and everything weighed about 7200lbs. You could get a weight distribution system. Itr helps a lot.

Thamks Guys you put my mind at ease. I really wanted the 8.5 by 20 in case I had to haul a full size car. I didnt think the 7' wide trailer would be wide enough.

I would defiantly go with a trailer hitch and get that off the bumper, IMO. Good luck.

I'm sorry I said that wrong. I do have a hitch. I forgot the old trucks did have  ball mount on the bumper. I just was clarifying it was not going to be a gooseneck.
