MY Ignition problem!
« on: September 28, 2015, 06:35:51 pm »
Very similar symptoms as in post http://www.legendsracer.com/index.php?topic=1965.0

The first sign of trouble was that the tach had started to bounce at higher RPMs.
The problem kept getting progressively worse to the point that the car was way down on power.
Then could not get it to rev over 6,500 RPM.

Swapped out red box from a known good car – No fix!
Swapped out blue coil pick-up – No fix!
Possible Fuel pump / filter problems? – Discount fuel line at carb – pumps fuel into can just fine – No fix!
Checked carbs – – No Problem found!
Checked Compression - Compression good
Replaced ignition switch  – No fix!
Replaced all connectors under dash and on red coils – No fix!
Replaced plug wires -No fix!
Replaced spark plugs – No fix!
Disconnected Tach -No fix!
Added extra ground – No fix!

In trouble shooting, ran out of things to try so started swapping out coils from a good car, one at a time.  Swapped the front red coil  – RAN GREAT!
Then upon careful examination of the two holes that the two plug wires plugs into the coil set – found a bunch of dirty carbon build up.  Sprayed electrical cleaner into hole but also had to scrap out the build up.
Put the original coil in and it all works great now!

Hope this can help someone else save hours of head banging that I went through or at least use as a trouble shooting suspect list!
