not sure what this part is
« on: May 21, 2014, 04:13:11 pm »
I have a 1250 sealed motor and I noticed after my feature last week that a metal piece on top of the valve cove was broken. I am not sure what it is but it looks like a strip of tin sitting on 2 rubber boots that are pushed into the valve cover. There's 2 of them and they line up with the spark plugs, is this something that is very crucial? the metal piece is the part that is broken.

thanks in advance for your input.

I think your talking about the emission that used to be on the these motors. If so as long as they are not leaking you are good but I would defer to a motor guy.

I would  agree to this as being the emissions plug strap that goes between the two port caps. Heat and vibration does this often. Do not worry if it is just the strap broken.

Pic would be a plus. I think Dennis and Scott are correct though.

yes. these are EGR ports. On the street bike (emissions) this would be piped back into the intake. As long as it isn't leaking, don't worry about it. the straps break all the time.
