spindles, casted vrs forged.
« on: January 26, 2014, 04:34:16 pm »
Hey guys,

I'm working on the legend car getting it ready for the start of the season. I'm still new to these cars and It was recommended to me that I checked the spindle carriers and make sure the mounting holes aren't elongated. Both the left and right sides are ok. Attached is a pic of the left spindle. These are the same ones that came with the car used. As you can see its beat up a little. It looks as though someone hammered on the spindle to try and get the ball joint out. The top is gouged up as well. I also believe this one is casted, from what people tell me from this picture, verse's the new forged ones. This brings me to ask a few questions:

1) How do I tell if it is casted or forged? Someone told me that there weren't any forged marks, where would they be?

2) I understand that USLC no longer sells these the casted piece. Are the casted ones junk?

3) Are the forged ones that much stronger? Should I be replacing both? Like I said the right side looks Aok.

One thing I've learned is if it looks questionable, change it. I plan on changing this pictued spindle before the season starts. I'm just debating on whether or not to change the right side as I believe it is also a casted piece. We run asphalt tracks, some are pretty fast and some are bumpy.

    Thanks guys,

Eric

The forged ones have a very smooth, finished appearance.
I don't think the cast ones are junk. I haven't broken a spindle in at least the last 2 seasons (50 races) on dirt and mine are cast.

Thanks Jim, by the way, your opinion, would you replaced the spindle I have pictured?

I can't say without having it in my hands, but when it doubt, swap it out.
$80 isn't worth a hard wall shot.

That's casted, the new forged ones only came out around july? this past year, I'd change it but that's just me.

The forged ones were out last winter, they just wanted to sell out of the cast ones first before offering them.
I know you could get the forged ones in the spindle kit in January last year.

Either way, replace that one

Unless someone tells me otherwise, forged items are always stronger than cast.  Go with a new forged spindle.
