engine rear cover
« on: August 02, 2013, 01:12:13 pm »
We just had a rebuild done on a 1250 from USLCI engine shop.  when we received the engine yesterday, we were missing the cover that seems to go over the timing adjustment... I think. (right above the master cylinder in the car). See image.

I am told that these are typically removed to let additional heat escape. Should I worry about dust/debris/etc. damaging anything under the cover.

Feedback appreciated!

Brandon.

Brandon, are you racing dirt or asphalt? If asphalt we do not run them.

I see more racers without them on asphalt than I see with them. I agree it seems kind of risky, but I do not see problems from the cover being removed.

the pits we are at are dirt I have always been concerned that dirt could ruin the crank seal..

LOL, that reminds me of one of my brain storms. I drilled vent holes in the cover and glued mesh inside of it, man I was a genius! I was racing the feature, the car started popping and banging. Pulled in the pits, an hour of searching and we found the problem. Glue melted, the screen got into the pick up and it would not run. I learned one thing, there must be a crap load of heat in there and it will melt the glue we used.

make sure you set the stator, seems to be maxed out to 45 in the picture.

what would be the best % to set the timing plate/stater? I have been told between 37 and 39% is this about right?
