Was doing some quick searches. This subject came up way back when. Can't find it right off. Hmmm!!!

That was similar to one of the thoughts. If I recall, the thinking was to rivit it to the under side of the fender. I think another solution was to bend the exhaust just a bit for better clearance. I think it was Dave that said something about standing on the collector or exhaust pipes and bending enough to get a bit more clearance. lol! Whatever works I guess.

That spells broken headstuds. No offense I know you were passing a previous post on but I cant help it.  What hillbilly stands on the exhaust to bend the header, lmao. This new China=Borla pipes are longer, hit the shock tower and are not impressive.

LOL! A little hillbilly engineering from back in the day.  :D
Not saying it is the right way to do things.
We were even joking about putting nomex under garments under the fender. Hence, the thought to rivit some heat resistant material to the underside of the fender.

My thinking tells me to raise the fender slightly to gain enough clearance.

Would not help with the heat issue, but I wonder if parkerizing would work on headers to protect them or if it would not hold up to the heat.  It has been used on firearms for quite awhile so it can take a decent amount of heat.  As far as the heat question, maybe putting a piece of exhaust insulation behind a piece of sheet metal then attach it to the fender?  It would give you insulation and protect it from debris.

Hmm my right side running board on the sedan has a wheel mark and I seem to remember where that car got the wheel mark on the left running board from the last owner.  ::)

But it was great seeing you at the NELCAR Meeting this past weekend Eric.

Dan

Hey guys,

I ran into this problem with my 34 ford sedan last year with the muffler burning the fender. Its bad enough to effect the paint. It doesnt help the the left side running board is slighty tweeked but in conversations with other Ford owners this is sort of a common problem the way that the fender is shapped on the left side.

Anyone have a tricks on this? Im thinking about making a bracket to bolt to the car to prop up the fender a little but wanted to see what others had to say about it first.

Thanks,

Eric

Ah Ha! The truth comes out. :) Good to see you too last weekend Dan.

Thanks guys,

Someone did recomend me loosening the the header, applying preasure or standing on it (gently) and tightening it back up. I did try that, but it didnt do a whole lot.

I bought some heat reflective  tape at Autozone. That didnt seem to work well either, in fact I think it made it worse.

I have some flat stock in the garage, I may make a small "L" shaped bracket, bolt it to the body of the car and use a duz fasterner to secure it to the fender.

     Thanks guys!

Eric

Or, you could just move the fender up a little.

just cut a few holes in the fender. Lets the heat out, and stops the burning of the fender.

I was thinking to shim the fender a bit to gain clearance.
I think Brad's idea may be useful also. "just cut a few holes in the fender. Lets the heat out, and stops the burning of the fender."

The point is that the muffler is less than an inch away from the fiberglass, cut all the holes you want, it's not going to change that

I did cut a hole to get rid of the burn mark the exhaust leaving on the fender. There are also several holes already up and down in this area but it still burns. Unfortunetly, I have run out of the number of holes that I am aloud  to have, any more an I wouldnt be Inex legal.

one or two large holes over the muffler is all it takes. I have done this and seen this several times. Yes, if you already have holes in the fender, you might not be able to do this, but then you just might need a new fender...

I had an issue with the new muffler blowing  blowing a hole in the fender where it meets the running board.what i did was line the fender with a thin piece of sheet metal and rivet it in.worked perfect.
