Fuel Line
« on: January 04, 2013, 02:49:24 pm »
Do all braided fuel lines get brittle after usage I ask because I am Putting my car back together and noticed that the rubber is very brittle, plus I had an incident last year where the line from the fuel pump to the second filter came apart and clogged the filter. Does all fuel line do this or just the braided line?

Thanks,

Robert

What are you using for fuel?
Ethanol will break down rubber and other things pretty fast.
Here in Southeast WI, we have 10% ethanol in pump gas (soon to be 15%), and it eats everything.

I replace my fuel lines and fuel cell foam every 2 years to be safe

Robert are you using pump gas? If you are, the ethanol in the gas today will eat up your fuel line. It will also eat the pick-up line in your tank. We has two of our cars have this happen until we changed fuel. It is worth pulling you tank top off and taking a look. I think that they make a fuel line that will not do this but I don't know if they make one in steel braided. Anyone else?

After that happened to us I bought a barrel of racing fuel, this year I believe we have to use track fuel, whatever that is. I was also reading that at the Nationals you after to pump gas.

Most of the big national races require you buy gas from a certain station near the track. I think that has to do with ease of testing, trying to be consistent, and perhaps to help out the local economy.. You can get braided line that is compatible with alcohol fuels. As with fuel cell foam, rubber lines, etc... They do still need to be replaced periodically.

Steve is spot on. We will have to run pump gas at the winter nationals but as soon as we get home it is out. I was never checked for fuel down there but not the risk either. I was checked at the dirt nationals when they were at North Carolina but then again they checked everything there. I still change my fuel filter ( I like the one Jim sells be cause of the micron level) a couple of times a year just for insurance.

Robert,
I use an aluminum filter housing with stainless steel element. I don't recall the filtering microns right off.
The ones Jim sells are cheap enough, and easily replaceable.
DO change your fuel cell foam on a seasonal basis. It's not that expensive, and will save you headaches should it break down.

I use the filters Jim sells, but My concern is the hose itself. Our motor started sputtering so we changed both filters. It wasn't until after missing 2 practices and the heat race that I noticed fuel was spilling onto the ground through the braided steel line because the rubber had just deteriated completely. There was no rubber under the hose clamp.

How much and what size fuel cell foam do you need to buy to replace it in the black fuel cell?

If I'm not mistaken isn't the black kind not supposed to breakdown like the yellow one? I know one is better than the other and will take alcohol better.

The yellow is supposed to be for methanol, and it is also more than double the price at $17 per block.
I use the black and change it every other year, I'd probably change the yellow every other year too to be safe, so it seems like a waste for me.
