changing a welded rear gear to spooled
« on: May 31, 2012, 01:29:50 pm »
How hard is it to change a welded rear gear to spooled?  Is it tough, or open it up, unbolt, put in the spool and go?

Have no idea, just thought I'd ask before looking to do this.

Thanks,
Nate

Pretty much unbolt, put in the spool and go

Thats why it's "pretty much" unbolt, put in the spool, and go.
Most people will want to replace the seals, I do on all the rear ends I do, and there is some shimming necessary on some, but not all. Easier if you have a crush sleeve, it can be as easy or difficult as you want it to be.
I guess my point was that it's not too difficult to try on your own

Ah, not sure what "bolt it in and go" means?? and also dont know why you need a crush collar to do this ?
You also have gear "backlash" and side clearances that need to be set.
Like I said in a different post.
If you dont know how to do it...Dont. You can do more harm than good. Let someone that does them all the time to do it. Its not the cheapest way, but it will last longer.

It is not as simple as taking a welded gear out and tighten down a couple of bolts to put in the spool. There are tolerances for setting up a rear end.
Yes... You Can do it yourself. Not rocket science either. Do your research, take your time.

Mike is right. Take it to a Transmission shop. It's a good idea to replace pinion bearings and seal as well. Doing that the correct way means a new crush sleeve.

Think I would take my rear end to a shop that does rear end and drivetrain work than my local transmission shop.
Most transmission shops in my area do ONLY transmission work. We do have a couple of driveline specialty shops and race shops that I would trust.
As I stated before; Not rocket science. With the proper information and tools, you CAN do it yourself. For those that don't have the tools or confidence to do the work themselves; Then by all means, take it to someone that can.
