1200 or 1250?

If a 1250 the starter chain broken.

1200 starter clutch is slipping. If it is cold, then the oil is lifting the rollers allowing it to slip.

You might have to change the oil to lighter viscosity, or bump start and warm it up. If the problem goes away, its the oil.

No bendix spring on a Yamaha, only a one way starter clutch.

I broke a starter chain last year and it caused a lot of damage. If it is a 1250 you will have to send it back to USLC.

Mine broke right at the start of a race and went down and wrapped around the the crank and locked it up for a second then made the cam chain jump timing. Needless to say it did a lot of damage. I had some bent valves and more. I also could hit the starter and hear it spin but not engage. To see if this is what happened to you, you need to drop the bottom pan and look up and you will see if it came off . When I did this there were pieces of chain laying all in the pan. Hope this is not what happened to you.

he did not spin, but  almost stalled car when a car spun in front of him, completed race very with out issues, went to leave tech and that is when we found the starter issue

i had this same whining problem while trying to start my engine last year and would only "whine" and not catch the motor and turn it over but only every 5-7th try. simply replaced the started and it has been good ever since then. hope you don't have to send it back

the gear that is inside the motor that the starter would spin over seems to "free wheel' in both directions, would that mean a broke chain?

Most likely, I just checked a 1200 and a 1250 that are on the bench for work and the gear within the engine will only turn one way.

Now, with that said, both of these engines have the 1250 sprag style one-way clutch, I do not have a 1200 with the three roller clutch to check.

Since you said it was a 1250 I think you better pull of the pan and see what you have.

I agree, pull the pan and do not run the motor.  If this is not a starter issue you more than likely have a chain problem.
