Transmission Noise
« on: March 03, 2012, 11:11:24 pm »
Wondering if anyone has had this happen to them before. After we got home today from practice, I had the car in neutral and pulled it out of the trailer. I went to push the car around in the garage and started to hear a noise that seems to be coming from the transmission. It does not make the noise when I pulled the car backwards but does when I push it forward.  Any ideas what this could be? We ran great at practice and had no issues, this noise just has me concerned.

Were you pushing the car around while it was running, or was it shut off?
What kind of noise was it?

The car is shut off and in neutral.  When i push the car backward, no noise.  When I roll it forward, noise.  I can't really tell if it's coming from the rear gear or in the tranmission.  Not sure how exactly to explain the noise really.  Like i said the car ran great, so i'm not even sure its an issue.  Just wondering if anyone else hears any noise in the driveline when they roll there car forward.  I can't recall hearing it before.

Without hearing it, I can't offer much, but I don't think I would worry about it.
Just my opinion

Well it was not the transmission, it was the rear gear.  I just had the gear switched over from welded to spooled.  The rear end builder said the rack and pinion was not in good shape, but he had raced worse.  To just run it and see what happened.  Well, after about 40 laps of practice, it's done.  I pulled the drain plug last night, and there was metal shavings everywhere.  Looks like I'll be buying a new one.  Fun times....

At least it's better than buying a new motor...

No doubt.  If the  motor fails, we will be done.

If its just the bearing that went you could just get it rebuilt, its about 125.00 for all the bearing and races.

Not sure I understand what the rack and pinion  had to do with the noise in the rear end. Hope the rear end fix will not be too expensive for you.
