Lug Nuts
« on: February 04, 2012, 10:21:21 pm »
What is the torque that should be used on the lug nuts? Saw some guys at the track using a Dewalt cordless impact and they are about 340ft/lbs of torque. I was just about to buy a Craftsman, but it only produces 200ft/lbs. Thinking this was too light, my son called a friend that used to race Legends and he said 200 was too much, to use 84. Looking for other input.

TIA,

Robert

Assuming you are using 12mm studs, 70-80 lb-ft is the recommended range

Just because the impact goes up that high doesn't mean he was tightening them that tight. That high will twist the studs off. It all depends how long you let the impact hammer. If your good with one you could use a gun rated at 600ft/lbs, and have them at 80ft/lbs.

Cheap Harbor Freight gun.
Been using it for 3 years without a problem to put them on, then torque them before the race when checking tire pressures

100ftlbs is what I do.  I also use ARP 8740 chrome moly studs, less chance of them twisting off or the thread getting dinged.
