Non-Legends topic
« on: August 29, 2011, 06:35:18 pm »
I'm looking at a new (gently used) tow vehicle and looking for input on the Duramax diesel motor. I'm looking at two trucks 1: 2008 Ford F-250 with the 6.4  and 2: 2009 Chevy 2500HD with Duramax. I have been told of the problems with the 6.4 and haven't heard of any problems with the 6.6. Any OBJECTIVE input would be greatly appreciated.

Scott

Well if you would consider a gas truck we have a toyota tundra and its great for the price.  With the right gears in it it can tow up to 10,000 pounds

I think you already know, forget the Ford BIG problems with the diesel, I know several people who have had major engine issues. I really like the Dodge, its a working machine.

Add another feller to the engine problem list... We'll never buy another ford diesel again.

Unless you're paying cash, it's cheaper to buy new than used right now.
Ford, Dodge, and Chevy are all offering 60 months 0% financing, and I think they are all 5/100 powertrain warranty.

Its kind of like the oil debate, everyone has an opinion, and everyone has a friend thats stuff blew up.
I have a 1997 Chevy, a 2000 Dodge, and a 2004 Ford, and have had minimal problems with any of them, nothing drivetrain related...though I know people who have had problems with all three makes.

Yeah, that is why I posted a link to a diesel message board.... 'read all about it'. Them boyz over there know more about diesels than I. Gotta admit though, owning ours has been a learning experience..

It has the Allison transmission in it.

I wish Chevy would do away with the dramax, that  trans would be why I would buy a Chevy, but the dramax is why I walk away. The Dodge with the Cummings is a great motor but its in a sh1ty create, the truck sucks. Ford trucks, the only one that I would buy is a two wheel drive with the 7.3 in it. Stay away from the 6.0 and the 6.4  junk. Now if you can afford the new 6.7 in house ford diesel go for it.
I have a 2002 ford f350 dully 4x4 with the 7.3 its chipped with a 4" exhaust and intake .I pull a 48 ft trailer  with it and get 14.5 mph all day with it. Now the trans started to rattle so thats rebuilt and I rebuilt the front end in it because lord forbid you can grease it. Thats why I said 2 wheel drive, unless the ball joints have been changed to the greasable kind and then if you have the front end apart you might as well do the front ujoint in the diff. So everyone has some type of problem.

...kinda like the oil debate.

I have a friend that blew up 2 Allison transmissions in 2 years pulling an open modified trailer.
I have a friend that has a 99 F350 that is supposed to have the worst transmission in all the land, and he has 300k+ on it.
I worked at a Dodge dealer for many years, and saw all kinds of sh1t with them.

Scott, just get what you want, everything can develop a problem.
