Fire Extinguisher Installation Question
« on: February 17, 2011, 10:07:43 pm »
I recently purchased a 2.5L AFFF bottle for my son's Bandolero and I had a question about installation.
I read the rules and didn't see anything about installation specifics, i.e. "must be mounted to frame, or must be mounted in cockpit."
I just want to avoid any headaches prior to tech inspection.

My initial plan is to mount it in the upright position in the cockpit to the wall below the starter/power/kill switches.
Are pop-rivets acceptable to use to mount it to the sheet-metal?

Thanks in advance to anyone that can help.

Hi Chris,

Here is a thread from the Legends Car threads that you may find helpful.

Perhaps Jim (VMS Motorsports) or Ed (BandoStuff) could answer more specifically on the installation proceedures.

Question as to pop rivets... I'm going to say welding in a couple of tabs and bolting the bottle in is the best route to go.
My opinion, for what it's worth.

No experience with Bando's, but I know I would not use rivets, heck, I have to replace 10 rivits a week just from vibration racing a Legend on dirt. One hit and that bottle is loose and bouncing around the cockpit.

I have seen guys put it in the nose of the car bolted to the floor pan, which helps with nose weight but in my opinion i have seen too many front clips pushed in and wouldn't want to risk a rupture.  I have ours mounted on the left side below the switches with a back plate and bolts. I haven't seen or heard of any tech issues with location just if its a functional extinguisher or a dummy ballast.

I originally thought about the nose of the car as well. Seeing how there is TONS of space up there, but had the same feeling about loosing the front clip.
But it sounds like the left side of the cockpit may be our best bet.

Thanks for everyone's input, I really appreciate it.
Off to fab me a mount place to bolt it...thanks.
