Left rear spring
« on: February 13, 2011, 01:33:39 pm »
hi all,
I just looked at the left rear of my car and the spring is touching the rear end housing.  Are all cars like that?

Do you have a spacer where the shock bolts onto the housing ?

Shouldn't need one.
Neither of my cars have spacers at the housing mount or the chassis mount

Well my guess is that the rear end is probably not square.  I did change the hiem joints on the panhard bar so that bar might be to long now, i'm going to mess with it a bit tomorrow and see if that helps

At the end of last season I found my rear spring was touching my rearend as well.  Turns out my rearend yubes weren't straight.  Had to get it re-tubed.  I don't know how you check this but it is defenitly a bad thing.  On mine when the spring hit the tube during the last race it also ended up bending the shock.

i'm not sure if thats my problem, the right side isn't touching the rearend.  Also, i measured from the rearend to one bar on both sides and the left side seems to be about 1/2 inch farther forward.

Try pulling your axle out. If it doesnt come relatively easy, your axle tube is most likely bent.

So how did you come up with the extra space? Yeah 1/4 in. sounds fine. I don't believe I have any spacers between the shock and the rear end housing either. Where the shock bolts onto the housing I've seen those mounts bent or twisted also.

You need to take the axle out anyway.Like Jim said,if it doesnt come out easy it's bent.Cheap enough fix.

That all depends on pinion angle but use spacers to get the spring away from the axle tube.  Not all rearend housings are the same so the mounts will be different.

Alright so i replaced the hiem joints on the trailing arms.  I notices that the new hiem joints are a bit longer then the old ones even when they are screwed in all the way.  I put the old ones on and checked and now have about 1/4 inch of room between the spring and rear end.  It makes sense also because the new hiems are about 1/8 of an inch longer.  Now also the rear end is not square so i'll probably get a bit more clearence once it is squared.  Also what does everyone run for pinion angles and how do you  measure them?

Thanks,
Dan
