Gear position sensor leaking oil
« on: July 05, 2010, 04:56:54 pm »
I have a leak coming from around the gear indicator.  I removed it thinking that I may just need a new O ring.  However, it was badly distorted and I can see how the O-ring would not be able to seat well.  I was wondering if it had been improperly been installed originally.  Possibly the clutch bracket had not been fully removed before it was installed and it had been forced in at an angle?  Or do these just melt?  Any way, I need to replace it.  Does anyone have any input as to why it failed and a part number and good source to buy a new one?
Thanks in advance,
Okiesnake

I have seen this several times over the years. They have all come off of engines that were running HOT HOT HOT...

You can also see where it embedded at the flange from the heat as well.

If the oil temp never gets over 300 then you will not see this happen. The only way to prevent it is to cool down the oil.

You will have to get a new one from USLC...

My guess would be heat related also.
DanH was working on making some of these out of some better material. Don't know if he ever got them done.

Thanks everyone for you great answers.  I followed the other thread and then went to Babbits.  I then posted a question about what Yamaha Motor Cycle to cross referrence. http://www.legendsracer.com/index.php?topic=1387.0
Hopefully someone can answer that question for me as well.
Does anyone know the OEM part number (Yamaha #) for the 6-wire indicator?
