Rule Question about mandatory left side bar
« on: August 29, 2009, 08:00:41 am »
All,
I might be stupid, but I'm not sure what they are talking about here.  I bought the car used (2 bar chasis) and I don't see any bar that is anywhere near this lenth anywhere near 25" from the left B-Pillar.  Where exactly should this bar be?  I figure it must be in the rear trunk area somewhere, but if someone could help me out a little bit more or even post a picture, it would be great.  I plan to go to the Dirt Nationals in a month and a half and figure they might actually inspect the car there, so I don't want to get sent home for something silly like this.

Here is a copy/paste of the rule.
Mandatory “Left Side” Bar in the rear - A mandatory
bar (left rear) must be added to every Legends Cars frame
(both coupes and sedans). The material used for this bar is
(1”x 1 1/2” x 0.120” wall). The length for the sedan is 14
3/4” and the coupe is 13 1/2” (with an angle at the one
end). The distance this bar should be from the B-Pillar is
25”.

Yes, they do a very good job teching at the Nationals.  I have also wondered where that bar is and I think I had it figured out but I cant remember.  I wouldnt worry about that for the Nationals, most cars have that so I dont think they are really looking for that anymore.

Racecar spelled backwards is racecar. Racecar upside down is expensive.

I found this on our cars both 37 Sedans. Meets the description being 25" behind the b pillar and the size/length used. If you need a picture I can take one later.

I definately do not have that bar.  In my car it looks like that bar would be straight at both ends but the rule says it should have an angle at one end.  Am I missing something?  Also, that isn't just an added bar in the 4 bar cars is it?

First thing I would do is call 600 and give them your vin #. They'll let you know within 5 minutes if the rule even applies to your chassis

I believe that the angled end is just for the coupes.  The sedans will be a 90 degree cut both ends.  Looks just like the bar on the right side that the panhard is connected to.
If it isn't fun, why are you doing it?

Do what Jim said, but sounds like your chassis has it Rick.

I looked and I definately do not have that bar on the left.  I have one there on the right that the panhard bar hooks to.  It doesn't look like a problem putting one in.  Vern, I'll look at your car on Saturday just to make sure before I fab it up.  Who knows, it might stiffen my car up a little.  Thanks everybody.

Also, I just talked to Tony at 600 and he said that rule applies to all cars.  He said part of the reason it is there is to make sure the rear doesn't hit the fuel cell when the trailing arm breaks (which mine already has).  Thanks again everyone.

Yep, when I got in a wreck earlier this year and got hit in the LR that was the bar that stopped the rear end housing from taking out the fuel cell.
