Rusty pipes
« on: June 06, 2014, 03:40:49 pm »
Hey guys,

Im wondering if there is a way to make these exaust pipes look beter for a long time. Ive got the old non stainless ones that are all brown and rust colored.

I know that some motorcycle guys take there pipes and clean them up with sandpaper, start at a real heavy grit and work there way down to a real fine paper and then hit the pipe with good metal polish. They come out looking great. Im sure this would work just fine but how long would it last before it became rusty again? I dont want to try somthing that will only last a short time.

It doesnt help that I have an open trailer and sometimes when I travel the car is outdoors overnight, covered up but still exposed to the damp weather.

Has anyone tried somthing like this? Just thinking out loud.

Thanks,

Eric

I have painted mine with HI-Temp paint and it made them look a lot better.

How long ago did you do that? How does it hold up? What sort of prepwork did you have to do? Header paint? What kind? Did you spray the collector too?  :)

Clean them up with a wire wheel on a drill, works faster than multiple hand sandings. Then polish them with an emery cloth. They will then be ready for header paint, or VMS Motorsports hillbilly dirt racer rust-proofing

JIM BUCHER, VMS MOTORSPORTS LLC, AND ANYONE ELSE RELATED TO OR AFFILIATED WITH THE AFOREMENTIONED DOES NOT RECOMMEND OR ENDORSE ANYONE PERFORMING THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE.

After everything is clean and rust free, hang it out in your yard somewhere, all apart.
Wipe it down with a nice coating of transmission fluid.
Grab a torch, and start it on fire.
After the fluid burns off, wipe it down, and repeat two more times.

I just used some paint thinner and wiped them down quick and painted. It still looked good after a year. I would touch them up when I pulled them off for anything though.

Header wrap works also. Be aware that header wrap soaks up fluids and can cause it's own problems.
