Interested in getting into racing.
« on: June 30, 2013, 09:07:09 pm »
Hi everybody, I've been a racing fan and car enthusiast for some time now, but I just went to see my first race last night. I went to Riverhead Raceway in Long Island, New York. I saw the Legend cars racing and after looking into them I am interested in learning more about how I would go about getting into this, as in the cost, where I could practice, etc. What I especially want to know and why I am asking here is the kind of stuff a newbie wouldn't think to ask, but a veteran knows and thinks is useful.

Thanks in advance for your help.

By the way, I'm 17 years old, forgot to mention that.

I would suggest hooking up with the nearest dealer to you. Normally they will have cars to test drive and or set up a test drive for you to become familiar with the chassis and it's operation. You can talk race cars day in and day out on the internet but hands on learning is the only real way to get to know the cars and your ability within them

Is it against etiquette to test drive if I don't plan on purchasing a car immediately? I don't have money to buy a car right now, so I wanted to learn a bit while I try to figure something out.

There are several threads on how to get started here on the site. Do a quick search.
The test rides are a cheap way to see if this is for you.
Remember that there are other costs involved besides buying the race car. Have to be able to tow it; Safety gear (helmet, race suit, gloves, shoes, Hans device, etc...). It's an expensive hobby; But very addicting!

Welcome to the site!

A very good way to learn about the cars and racing, in general.
I got hooked some 10,000 years ago changing tires on a sprint dinosaur,

gotta find somewhere to start, right? no one in my family has the least bit interest/knowledge on this. Luckily I'm right by the track every weekend, so i'll be able to see the racing, but I want to find my way into a car lol.

Go down to the pits. Meet the drivers and mechanics. Most are very willing to talk about racing. You will meet a lot of nice people! I am sure you can find a few that wouldn't mind a helpping hand and a willing mind.

I had a neighbor that raced sprint cars. Changed tires and soaked up all the knowledge I could.
Helpped a friend rebuild his Street Stock in the off season. Another learning experience.
Got my first chance to drive a "race car" from this same friend. A mechanics race. That really got me going!!!
Nobody is just going to give you a car. A lot of money and time involved. Also, a lot of learning.
Lucky for you to live near a track!

Not trying to discourage you. Just the reality of it all.
Seriously; Go to the track. Hang out in the pits instead of the stands.
Talk to everyone that will give you time. Offer to help out.
Worst that can happen is that you will learn something and make some contacts. Perhaps even a few good friends.

Definately. I know I won't be given a car, but hopefully I'll learn so that when I have money to spend I can get into it smoother.

Thanks for all the help.
