door cave in
« on: September 04, 2009, 11:17:25 pm »
Well I started 4th in the feature last nite in Wishek ND, a friend started in front of me and my traveling buddy started behind me.  We had a plan to push each other out front on the green. Well the guy behind me, his bumper got hooked on mine so when he hit the gas he noticed me get loose.  Well when he hit the brakes I spun.  After most of the cars got by me, I got T-boned by another car on my left side door.  I went by ambulance to the er to get checked out.  After a Ct scan of my head and neck (which was clear) I was sent home.  THe door caved in, which I was told by my dealler that he has never seen it before.  All the parts are here at the house and hope to get it up and running by next sunday.   It bent the door, rim, nerf bar braces, and the lower a arm.  Broke the shock, upper control rod, bent the lolliepop by the fire wall, broke the LF fender and put a hole in my door skin.  It also took a divit outa my tire.

I'm thinking the new door will get some more reinforcements to it.

Stay safe guys.

Joe

  ;) Hi Joe,

Good to here your alright, your really lucky you didn't break your leg or something !!! What size track did it happen, was it asphalt ? I ran a 1/4 mile high bank asphalt track and got T-Boned too, but the car was fine and the door held up, just needed a drivers side nerf & front bumper. What happened to me was I was running the high side going  down the back chute and the car to the inside of me got loose and bumped into my LR which forced me off the track into the gravel which when my tires hit that stuff  it shot me left,  in front of  16 other cars I got nailed in the left side nerf then hit head on.

Hope you can fix your car for next sunday

Thanks.  It was on a 1/4mile dirt track.  I don't even have a bruise on my leg from it.  I to thought I'm lucky with no broken leg.   I'll get a better picture of the door once I get it off the car.  I still am shockedat how it caved and twisted.

Good to hear you were ok from your wreck also.

True it did do its job.  Will feel a bit safer with some added bars in the door.

Joe,

I'm glad to hear you are alright. Check the rule book on the door re-enforcement. Think I remember seeing something on that. Sorry I don't have the info handy for you!

I was thinking about puting the angle iron pieces on the door supports like they require in New Jersey.  My fear is a hit like this bending the door enough for it to swing into the car.  Glad you are OK.  I've seen some really bad hits on short dirt tracks.

We put stops inside the door frame  (2" x 1/4" strapping, maybe 6" in length) after seeing a wreck similar to this.  I'll try to take some pics the next time I'm by the shop.  We've never had to "use" the reinforcement on the door frame yet, so I can't tell you how well it works.

I'm happy to hear that you weren't injured.
Go fast, turn left!

I bought the same size metal that is used on the door already.  I plan on filling in the spaces that are open with it.  I still should be able to be under the 52 % left side rule with that.

"15. DOOR PLATES: Doorplates on driver’s side door are
mandatory. Doorplates and strike plates must meet current
factory specifi cations. These door plates are permitted to
be added to the right side door. A competitor may use a  doorplate
covering the entire door area on either side of the
car as long as it is a maximum of 1/8” thick

and the left side percentage of weight remains less than 52%."
