Racing schools??
« on: January 24, 2009, 09:53:07 am »
Alright fellas, another question.

Are you required to attend a racing school before getting behind the wheel of a legends car?? Is there any special licensure??

Also, have any of you attended a solo II event with you legend car?? There is a local sports car club that does autocross, and it would be cool to run those events just to keep my skills up in between races.

Thanks for the help! More questions on the way! :)

No school necessary, and you just need to pay your fees to INEX to get a license.
Steve will be the one to talk to about autocross, well, if he ever puts his monster together!

Hi Nate,

No schooling or special license required; Just the fees to INEX. Some of the tracks have programs available to run laps in a Legends or Bandolero car.  A program like that would give you some some seat time, a little bit of insight into the cars without too much expense. We've had a few members do that, as well as some that have gone to driving schools.

There are a couple of us that run auto-cross. The set up and gearing on the car is completely different from running oval tracks.

If there is not a school available in your area, try to get your car out to a practice day at a local track even if they do not race legends cars.  Most tracks run play days before the season starts and some have practice days during the season.  If there are no legends people at the track, you can ask people in the other classes for setup advice.  Racers in just about any class would be glad to give you pointers.

If this is going to be your first time in a legends plus the shifting aspect, I would recommend the school at lowes on the 1/5 mile. It was a couple of hundred bucks but when my son took it he had never driven a stick, by the end of the day he could, all told they did 10 runs of six laps with instruction inbetween each. You really get a feel for the car and what it can do. The next time he was in a car he was at the shoot out with 24 other drivers. If it wasn't for the school i'd probably still be putting the car back together
best of luck
Rob

Rob,

I don't think shifting will be an issue. I can drive a stick and have had ridden sportbikes for many years now. So, it will take me probably one lap to get it sorted and I'll be off and running. My concern is handling myself in a crowd of cars and not bouncing off all of them. So, just some feel for the car before hand will really  help. I am going to schedule a test drive within the next few months. Then, once I get the car, I'll probably take it to some practice sessions and/or run the local autocross. Just to get comfortable.

Thanks,
Nate

Take it out in the street and play around with it.  I have a small parking lot across teh street from my house at a park that I play around in sometimes.  Either way that you do it will be good.  If your local track has open practice days during the week thats the best time to go out and get a feel for the car.

Where are you located and planning to race?

Racecar spelled backwards is racecar. Racecar upside down is expensive.

I live just outside of Asheville, NC. Newport, TN has a paved oval that I could race on. Bristol is close, so is Lowe's (both about 2 hours away). I think I could even reach out to CMP, VIR, and Road Atlanta for road course and I know there are several other ovals.

I definitely could run up and down the street. I am out in the sticks and I am almost at the end of our road. So I could do that too.
