fuel
« on: March 30, 2013, 08:34:02 am »
Im new this year and was reading the fuel rules. It says 4% oxygen (mtbe and ethanol only additives legal), my question is with most gas stations in my area have 10%ethanol in the fuel, anybody got any suggestions or does this rule need updated for 2013??

93 0ctane pump fuel, if you want to run race fuel most of it is a waste of time, the 1250 is a 10-1 compression motor. Alot of races mandate pump gas so unless you want to switch back and forth forget it. 110 octane race fuels that are sold at the local tracks is a waste of time. There are a couple fuels that will run well and increase hp with the right carbs. This fuel is $13.00 a gallon and up.

dennis do you think the higher octane fuels increase engine temps?

We used "Crate Fuel" whick 108 Octane and has lead in it. Our motors ran below 180*. Also wanted ethanol free fuel.

will crate 108 pass the specific gravity test?  Certain fuels will increase or help decrease head temps, I find it HARD to believe that ANY fuel would credited with 180 oil temps.

I've tried all different mixtures, and now just run 93 octane with a top end lube/lead substitute. We have 10% ethanol here too, but it's not in premium pump gas. I had 114 octane race fuel teched and it passed specific gravity

I'm not crediting the fuel for the oil temp just stating that it didn't increase our temp basically.

my question wasnt really about octane but oxygen content... the fuel i found will pass a gravity test is 100 octane but has 10% MASS of ethanol which is "illegal" based on the rules. 4% oxygen by VOLUME is pretty much nothing so do i have to find an ethanol free gas station or go buy a race fuel with no oxygen additives?

Running high octane (110 -115) gas will not increase horsepower in an engine with lower compression. It will actually lose horsepower.  Higher octane gas burns slower.  You need the high compression to burn that properly.  On a standard compression engine, pump gas will work better than 115. I cannot speak about 93 octane race gas.  Fuel can change engine temps.  For example, pure ethanol burns very clean and cool. The down fall is that ethanol burns fuel significantly more than gas. Ethanol (pure) also has no lubricating properties (thus more rebuilds) and additives have to be added prior to or after purchase.  I wish we could use E-85, you gain horsepower, while having the energy and some of the lubricating properties of gas. The horsepower gain is significant.

From what I have seen the higher octane fuel will increase HEAD temps. MS98 was really good fuel, it was so dang expensive and if your carbs arent just right it was a waste of time. Torco was good fuel too. Alot of guys buy 100 track fuel and mix it 50/50. I saw no gain on the dyno VS 93 pump fuel.

Richie,

Sorry; Fuel questions usually bring up the  octane debate.
As more and more states are adding a percentage of ethanol, I have not really seen any updates from INEX.
You may need to contact them to get an answer. Be sure to get a written copy in case you have to go rounds with tech.
Keep in mind that some events require you to buy your fuel from a certain station or at the track. That may end any debate about what the oxygen content.

Thanks Steve... I guess since everyone is running pump gas I'm just going to buy some racing fuel with 10%oxygen in it and a gravity that will pass tech and say i bought it at a local gas station.
