Tire advice???
« on: February 04, 2013, 01:19:51 am »
I purchased 4 new tires in the spring of 2012.  The rights are worn and need replaced.  The lefts are in good shape.  I live in a cold climate and was told not to use them if they were left out where they would get cold.  They were left on the car while it was on jack stands in a garage.  I am wondering if there is any real reason not to use the lefts again??? Any advise???

We would not run those tires. ALTHOUGH;  There are situations where you should do what best fits your budget. We cut our tires to go 4 or 5 nights at best. I  prefer 4 matching tires, same cut, same date code and cut the same day.  In the future for guys that change rights, the best thing you can do is to order a full set and an extra set of rights at the same time.  Some racers are having tires cut to go ten races or better. The problem is the tires hardens BEFORE you ever get to the best part of the tire, they blue up and roll up, get hard and you never get a tire that will perform at its best. These are just suggestions and certainly everyone does it a litlle different!

I assume you are running asphalt.
If  you are running dirt,  just run those tires

I don't have the luxury of a heated garage (or heated garage floors  ;D). I do my best to try to protect my tires from the weather the best that I am able. Not always an easy feat when one lives in "cold country". As Jim suggests, may not be as big of an issue for dirt tracks. Dennis makes a point about budget for the pavemet folks. Hot and cold affect the properties of the tire. IF you can afford a new set of tires, I would do it. Use the old tires for spares.  :-\

My heated garage consists of a small space heater and insulation.  Not as cold of weather in St. Louis as you get up north, but it has worked for years to keep it above freezing.  A heated floor would be nice.  I walk out into the garage in bare feet too much.   :)

My tires have a special place in the basement during cold weather.

You can re-cut the tires, typically there is not enough tread to re-cut the right sides and keep the measurements of all 4 tires to the spec the tire cutter has cut them. Angle and stagger can not be obtained.
