New and looking for your help
« on: June 10, 2012, 02:35:20 am »
Ive been stalking the message boards a lot lately but had not had the chance to really do anything else related to legend car racing until today. First, got to meet a ton of people I will be racing against once I get a car. Second, I have a, what I think, reasonably priced package to help me get started in this series.

My main reason for posting is that I really want to get honest opinions about the package.

Heres the deal, the seller is asking $8,500 which is $4,000 more than what I have in my name. I am working 80 hours a week so I can get a legend car but I would love to run a few summer stampede races over the summer if I can talk my dad into loaning me the amount I cant afford yet so I can race while continuing to work insane hours haha. I love kart racing but legend cars are what I want to spend my weekends in more than anything right now!!

"For sale is a '34 Chevy Coupe that was raced for one season in 2007 and a few races in 2008. Has not been on the track since. The car also comes with a few extras, spare bumpers, spare .358 gear (ring and pinion), wheel base gauge, toe plates, caster/camber gauge, 2 five gallon gas tanks and a metal holder for them, quick jack, four jack stands, fan, spare fuel pump, new front grill, and that's all I can remember off the top of my head. Will need new front fenders and tires. Currently has the BFGs and not the new Federal Tires.

"Price also includes a 7'x12' v-nose enclosed trailer."

The cars body looked like it was raced hard

Does this look normal or is there too much oil everywhere? Possible blown engine or something?

Again, too much oil or normal?
https://mail-attachment.googleusercontent.com/attachment/u/0/?ui=2&ik=f3a5a0eb4b&view=att&th=137d25134b0176b2&attid=0.2&disp=inline&realattid=f_h38xytln1&safe=1&zw&saduie=AG9B_P_9dPArwWFRW6_ADPYO12va&sadet=1339307729700&sads=9vsTBd725tmS2GfZWQlsP9h6310

heres a pic of the car in the trailer, not sure if anything seems off or anything
https://mail-attachment.googleusercontent.com/attachment/u/0/?ui=2&ik=f3a5a0eb4b&view=att&th=137d25134b0176b2&attid=0.1&disp=inline&realattid=f_h38xytli0&safe=1&zw&saduie=AG9B_P_9dPArwWFRW6_ADPYO12va&sadet=1339307782364&sads=PatL_Q0nDHm0Cq7313gS4tHpmv4

The trailer looks like it was well maintained, just seems small so I will most likely sell and use that money to go towards a 24' trailer to house the legend car, tools, parts and also all of my karting equipment, kart and all of my safety gear and other extras.

Thank you for any and all honest opinions!! You can send links of used car buying guides, I have seen a bunch but maybe I didnt see the one you have?? I have also kept up with the forum for a few months now and have a good idea about its worth, just looking for a second opinion from someone not related to the car or seller that is around these cars a lot. you guys rock for keeping this forum going!!! thanks for being open and being willing to share anything and everything!!

-William

(btw, going to most likely win my first championship next saturday in my kart! I started racing last may, never driven anything but my families cars and already getting a championship!!  :D ;D )

I bought a Rollin chassis for 2500 and waited til I could get a used motor  the used motor I bought was only 1800 so only had 4300 in car  safety gear u stil night need a set of tires  kept putting money in car since then to make it better most people aren't going to run up front right away so just needed a car to gain the most valuable thing called seat time

Ive thought about doing that, but I have my kart and I work at a race track where I can race basically as much as I want for free so I am looking for something to be semi-competitive with, not right out of the bat but something that I can be competitive with after a while. I would take the road you did but I dont have a shop or anything and Im not the most organized person so keeping up with upgrades will be tough until I get a trailer or move out to a larger lot with a decent shop to be able to build things up and be putting motors in and stuff. Ill keep an eye out for taking a route you did too though. My question is how difficult was it for you to get everything put together? Ive never gotten "under" a legends car to see how it really goes together so building one would be difficult I would think, especially working 80 hours a week! lol

Question for everyone, how do you think the motor is holding up? not raced since 08, will that cause issues? also when you need to do rebuilds how much of a difference would you say a rebuilt engine is from and old engine? I dont care about the speed too much since I will get it rebuilt once Ive got the money to do so again but does running an older engine pose problems of wearing the engine out to where a rebuild will do no good?

That car seams like a decent price with the trailer but i think the car is kinda rough plus it needs new tires ($600+) and maybe updates? since you want a nicer trailer i think i would continue looking try racingjunk.com dont rush into a buying one the most important thing when buying a car is find one with a motor with few races its alot cheaper to buy a car with a newer motor than buying one after one season since a motor last about 40 races if your lucky from my experiences and a new motor is $4500 also check to make sure the frame is straight and has been in few wrecks ask about oil changes nuber of races on motor and chassis and spare parts! . It says it has a season and a half on it some peoples season is 40 races others is 12? So i would check that also what part of the country are you in? Ill help you look also if you want

Here are a few threads on buying a used legends car:

I don't think the price sounds too bad considering the trailer is included. Looks like you would get most everything you need to get going. Sure, you are going to have to invest a little to get it in shape. You can always upgrade as you can afford to. If you don't already have current race gear, you will need to invest in that. Also, as you don't have shop space, the trailer would double as storage and a limited work space. As far as shopping around for other deals on cars, there is always our for sale section, racingjunk.com, eBay, and a host of club sites that you could check out'
Hope that helps.

Thanks for the replies!!

phylzub02: I already figured the tire cost, but I would most likely get a new set cut for texas motor speedway however the best cut is there. I forgot to ask about oil changes, thanks for reminding me!! 40 races is a lot for my area (north texas) with that small of a trailer I am guessing they didnt do a ton of races outside of tms which is only a 5-10 minute drive for the seller. Thanks for the offer to help look for a car, I honestly dont want to find the perfect deal before I can afford to start racing, one thing i learned in karts is you can have the vehicle, but if you put all your money into IT you have no money to pay for entry fees and all of the weekend things haha, I ll get back to you around december when I plan on being able to afford a nice car and trailer though if I need the help  ;D

Steve: didnt check the links yet, im supposed to be asleep, gotta get up early in the morning lol. ive got all of my fire retardent gear ready to go except a suit underwear and head sock. thats what i was planning on with a trailer, im tired of dropping $50 go kart carbs in the dirt, i dont think ill be so lucky with these carbs!! im on this site and racingjunk daily. never used ebay before, dont look there much either, how would you say ebay is for buying a car? too much risk for a newcomer?? ill have to find a club or track site, havent found any aside from houston and the local dealers of new cars. that definitely did help! thank you once again for your help!!

eBay is probably not the best place to buy a car. You may be able to locate a car for sale in your area though. Pretty good place to find parts and racing gear.
As always, be careful about eBay purchases. I live in an area without much Legends racing, so some of our members/ dealers have been a big help to me. Best bet is going to your track and asking around.

Do the window shopping. It gives you a good idea of what is out there and prices. Also helps to keep you motivated.

Things you don't know, or want to learn more about; Ask questions. Lots of people that have a lot of experience here on the site and are more than willing to share.

Regards,
