Car Starts
« on: June 22, 2011, 10:41:27 pm »
I purchased a new battery for my car.  When I hooked up the battery post the car starts.  I thought it was the solenoid.  I repalced it.  The same thing happens.  As soon as I try to hook up the cable to ther solenoid, the car trys to start.  Any recommendations?

Single post (small posts) or double on the solenoid ? If it is a double post, the small wire to the solenoid is connected to the wrong terminal. Another option would be check the pushbutton, disconnect a wire from one terminal of it under the dash. Hook up the battery cable and see if the issue is resolved. Ahead of the passenger door inside the drivers compartment is a connector for the start circuit wire harness, unplug it and try the same battery connection test. I have seen where a nerfbar has poked this wire harness and caused the issue you are having, shorting the wires together. Inspect the wireharness from that point back to the battery as it is routed along the driveshaft tunnel to see if it is shorted or pinched when the driveshaft tunnel was riveted in

Just check over all your wiring, it could be something simple like two wires crossed. I hooked wires up wrong before and the car would not shut off, lol. On our one car years ago we had a bad ground wire and it fried most of the entire wiring in the car.

I do that every season...can't turn the car off. 2 wires can cause alot of frustration!

Kind of a dumb question, but how do you end up getting it to turn off lol?

Switch the alternator wire to the switch to where it's supposed to be.
Dont have the problem now that we make our own harnesses, but little things like that can sure be FRUSTRATING!

Pull a primary wire off of one of the coils, if the engine will not turn off. The CDI will not trigger the ignition if one of the coil (small) wires is open
