Coupes & Sedans
« on: June 06, 2010, 05:20:57 pm »
It seems like there is alot more coupes around than sedans. If there is anyone that has owned both or driven both is there any advantages of one over the other?

I have heard that some say the sedans flex more? And that the coupes have a lower CG?

Just curious on your thoughts. Thanks!

There are a few old threads about coupes vs sedans. For the most part, Bodys are not interchangeable. Some tend to think that there is more room in a sedan chassis (they do tend to look that way). There is normally more head room though. Some parts of the country tend to be more coupes, some sedans. Some people claim that the coupes handle a bit better and a little less weight. Me.... I just like the coupes because of the body style. I have both.  ;) I think that if you check most of the tracks that run Legends Cars; There are normally more sedans. Just my observation.

Over the years I have noticed that typically there are more sedans on dirt and more coupes on asphalt.

The '34 coupe is more popular than the '37 coupe,  we owned a '37 coupe and it was an awesome car but our biggest issue was the lack of head room.

The '37 or '34 sedans are just a different body, same chassis but the only thing I have heard about the '34 sedans is that they could be a pain to work on things in the rear because the body comes further back.

I think coupes and sedans have different characteristics but I don't believe one is better than the other. Basically, it comes down to what you like or dislike.

The doors on the sedans are bigger than the suicide door coupes, easier  for the bigger guys to get in. I have one of each, and the coupe is easier to work on in the rear by far than any sedan, especially doing at the track adjustments and such

I have a sedan and I have a 10 degree.  Now I am 6 3 with longer legs and I need as much leg room I can get.  Now I friend is shorter than me and can not use a 10 degree, his head hits the roof.  So , I would see it depends on how long your legs are.  Like I said 10 degree from me with a 2 inch long steering shaft and a 1.5 inch steering wheel spacer.  After 4 years I have about as much room as you can get in one of these cars.

I am only 5' 10" and my head was touching the roll bar padding with the old seat tilted at 10 degrees.  With the 20 degree seat, I do not have a lot of legroom but my helmet is not touching the roll bar padding.

Sedans and FLAT top coupes have the same room.  The ? is 10 or 20 degree seat.  The deal is everyone is diff. and you will have to find a seat that fits you.  How tall are you is not the only thing. Do you have longer legs than someone else who is just as tall?  Are you taller in the body?

The two things I personally prefer about the coupe:
1) The coupe is a lot easier to put gas in!
My buddy is always spilling gas because he can't see how full the gas is in the tank of his sedan.
2) I like the way I can stick the steering wheel on the underside of the roof over the cage when I park the car (not so on the sedan).

But I'm only 5'8" and 160 lbs. So I fit fine.
