Placement of Fire System
« on: March 11, 2015, 01:21:28 pm »
Hi Guys,

SCCA mandates that I use a fire suppression system in the car for road course duty.  Probably a good idea, but I'm not sure where to mount it.

I have the setup, and I'm looking for pictures/suggestions on how others have handled it.  I know I cant put it on the shelf behind my head, and there isn't really room for it inside the car anyway.  Was thinking of creating a bracket and mounting it on the bar above the fuel cell and to the right (when looking at the fuel cell/trunk area from the rear of the car).  Any other help would be appreciated!!

I have a coupe and where you said is where I have mine mounted. Made a bracket for the bottle to rest in. That is the only place I could find.

Where did you mount your nozzles?

Right behind the rear firewall is a popular spot.
You can mount it inside the car if you choose to. Driveshaft tunnel, in front of the seat. I've seen a lot of different situations.

That link has some great ideas and information. I have one of the new cold fire systems from Speedway. It is different in that it is not like some systems that direct the nozzles to the fire, but rather soak the driver, so my nozzle is routed to the roll bar directly above the seat. there is a sensor tube that sets off the system once it reaches a certain temperature or is penetrated. It can also be set off manually by the driver. Since my bottle is mounted in the trunk, the sensor tube is close to the fuel cell and also routed up to the firewall. This way, it will be set off by a fire in the back or the front. Thankfully I haven't had to use it yet, but I did have a triple flip at the end of the season last year and the bottle did not come loose in the crash. Hope this helps.

Where did you mount your nozzles?

If a 2 nozzle system, one from the dash spraying at the drivers stomach/chest, the other on the engine. If a 3 nozzle, have the third pointed towards the fuel cell.
Make sure you know the spray pattern of your nozzles and mount accordingly.
