Cut tires for dirt or not?
« on: February 21, 2010, 06:02:21 pm »
I'm very new to the legends so excuse my ingnorance if so. I will running dirt at Carolina and East Lincoln this year. And trying to figure out if I need to get my right side tires cut. The guys that I have ordered my tires from run the dirt alot but they don't seem to be the fastest alot. They run around 3rd through 5th every show just about. That I have seen. And hey are telling me now that I need to camber cut my right side tires. The other guys or teams that I have talked to tell me that you shouldn't have to cut the RS tires. Just the LS for stagger. Which I can understand that. But they don't run the dirt alot. Both tracks are muddy so I'm thinkinig not cut the RS? I see most of you guys here seem to run more dirt so I'm hoping to get some good info.

I run dirt and I do not cut my tires at all. I dont believe that anyone that runs by us cut their tires.

You see that?....That just happened!

When I first bought the car, it was set up for asphalt and had cut tires on, so I ran them the first night until my new tires came. That was the only time I had cut tires on dirt. I guess I could see an argument for shaving the LR for stagger, but I'd rather have the tread depth

Like mentioned... run as much thread as you can on dirt.  One reason you may need stagger is if you have issues comming off the corners in these cars. They can be forgiving on dirt in this perspective as apposed to asphalt.  How does that old saying go ? Racing is like going to the bar... Wedge in, stagger out ?  I'm not saying your buddies are wrong, I have put a little stagger in these cars before. These cars do not use an angel toe so you can not utilize stagger to your benefit driving in hard and pulling up a little real quick on the angel toe to set the chassis into the corner with the stagger. Their would have to be a backpull throttle cable on the carbs to use this affect efficiantly (well, to my liking anyway).  Personally, I have accomplished the same result with chassis changes instead of swapping tires for stagger on a Legend. Honestly, I would suggest some seat time in the car to get to know how it reacts in different conditions with a good set of full thread tires, to start off. Once you know your ability and set-ups, you might find the need to play with stagger. Yes, loose is fast and you can naturally loosen or tighten a chassis with stagger. If you are going to run a chassis set up program of your own or someone elses program, stay focused on it and how to improve it for your good. If it includes stagger, so be it, stay focused on it. They are probably out there, those who feel stagger works for them in a Legend. I have set-ups of my own that are run with and without stagger. My own prefered set up that I am comfortable with does not utilize a lot of stagger. I would rahter have a full htread myself

Speak to Steve Beck of Hurricane Racing Pro, Thats who we get our tires from now for dirt. If you are going to run down at East Lincoln he is definitely the guy to get hooked up with.

Just to clear the air on what Hurricane has done with tires...

We don't camber cut the tires, we cut to true the tire and put stagger in, AND (you will have to figure that out on your own) ??
Hurricane cuts tires for more dirt teams than people Know....I know this because I am the one on the other end of the phone when people order tires and say please don't divuldge our name...This seems to be new to the seasoned dirt track teams and no one is telling anyone that they are using our tires...I wish I could tell you names but that isn't my place to tell, you figure it out. So the comment about where our tires finish in races is completly inncorrect!

Camber cut is for asphalt! Also Carolina and East Lincoln are not muddy tracks, they may get rough but not muddy!

Everyone has an opinion or ideas...I like results!
