They're not designed to land wheels first, either. I've never had a crash hurt like that one did. Besides bottoming out hard, my thumbs were bent backward (I always try not to wrap them around the wheel.) I felt bad about using Dave as a jump ramp, but I think it turned out better than if I had nailed him in the back.
When you look at the total damage, it's pretty amazing. Dave had to put his rear fender back together and repaint it and I lost a steering arm, two heims and a tie rod. The car to the right had a rivet head sheared off his door and a narrow tire mark down his number. I told him later that it took a lot of skill to shear that rivet off without damaging the door

Thus the invention of the "paw saver". Chris runs one on his Modified, always has, I think. Can't break a thumb...or 2, although I dont think anyone makes them anymore, why, I dont know.
