Title: How You Doing In 2008
Post by: justfreaky on March 17, 2008, 02:00:42 pm
So, the season is just about ready to really get busy. Wanted to start a thread so everyone could post how they are progressing. I Hope you all are about ready. Keep us all posted on how things are going (Good, Bad, Or Ugly).

My project is coming along slowly. I am trying to move, but am not having much luck finding a place. Hopefully, my new place will have a garage. Bought some nice parts over the winter, found someone to do the welding for me. Will get back on it hot and heavy when I get moved. Wish I had better news for everyone. I'll post pics as things get going.  :-[

well the car got a 3000 dollar facelift (everything) because it sure needed it. Then guess what happens? Last night we got word our track is closing! So now im in the sport 13 grand between car gear tools etc, and ive now got no reasonably close place to race at!
Jesus someone help me, im moving south/ west!!! Get me the hell outta NJ before all the stuck up people here run racing out of new jersey for good!

all this= bad start to season!

I'm way behind on the car at the moment.  Paint is having to wait for a decent weekend so I can get it outside.  I made the mistake of spraying a racecar inside one time, and won't do it again.  I'm also still waiting for parts to show up from the place where I got the car.  Missouri Legends do not race until late April, but some of the non-legends tracks around St. Louis are having practices over the next couple of weeks that I was hoping to make.  I hate the idea of showing up for my first dirt race in a legends car with zero laps of practice.

Also, sorry to here about your track closing.  I am guessing that it is Wall Stadium.  I hate seeing a place with that much history closing right before the season is starting.

Well JustFreaky,  I've almost got everything I need to change the spindle over, so I'll ship yours soon.

I've got the body painted white again, and tomorrow I'll mask off the top of the car to do the bottom color.  I've got the grill bezel, the running boards and the fenders all painted up and looking sweet!  God I love my heated floors.  Makes for a nice comfortable spray area.

So far everything is turning out looking droolicious!
I'm already beating people off the car, telling them to stop licking the paint.  It's not candy, just a damn fine paint job!

Once I've got the bottom painted, I'll paint the roll cage to match the fenders.

Yes Steve, I will post pictures.  Honest.  But you have to promise not to eat the pictures no matter how sweet the paint looks!

It's going to hurt something fierce when I get my first scratch.  (no that's not an invitation Ricky Bobby...)

RB is jealous already and he's only seen one fender.  Wait until he sees the rest of the car!  I am very pleased with the dupont paint I bought.  It goes on smooth, covers really well, and flows out nice and fine with just enough body to fill in sanding scratches.  Good on them!

Enjoying the cheapo hvlp spray gun I bought at Princess Auto.  It works just fine.  Good thing it came with a spare gun since I found out that I must have dropped it last year and it sprung a leak.  At $20 for the pair, who could resist, and to think it works great!

For my first paint job, it is unbelievably good looking.  Yup.  Proud new papa.  That's me!

Now to do the mechanical stuff needed.  Need to do valve shims, clean the carbs, oil change, change a bunch of heims, get new cut tires, adjust pinion angle, install harness, seat, and go racing.  That's all!  (40 days to test and tune at the local track)
 ;D

Mike

PS.  Sorry to hear that your local track closed down.  I dread the day when the city gets too close to ours.

Always hate to hear about track closures. Sorry Guys!  :'(
Hopefully you can find a track to race at. Maybe you can get a bunch of the gang together and approach some other tracks.

Mike,
Can't wait to see your work of art!
I promise not to eat the pics. I may still, on occassion, eat a little paste though.  ::) :D ;D

Sounds like everyone has been busy over the winter.

Best Of Luck To All!!!

I got the ride hieghts and springs all adjusted.  Need to get the front tend set up and then scale the thing.  Found out yesterday that my paint guy is backing out on me so as of right now I'm searching for someone to paint it.  :( >:( If I can't find anyone it will have to stay white or it'll have to wait till it gets warm out side and I'll go out to my brothers farm and paint it.  April 20th is the one and only test session I can make in ND and it just isn't looking good.  Hope to have it ready for the May 3rd race in Underwood for sure. other then that I'm excited that racing season is getting closer.

Track closings are a sad thing. When we started racing Legends in 2001, there was a track (Hardeeville Motor Speedway, SC) that was < 30 minutes from home. Long story short, the track shut down and our closest track now is 3-1/2 hours away. Still, we make the trip.

As far as racing this year, we've raced 4 times so far - 3 wins and a 3rd.  Looking forward to the Battle of Bristol at the end of the month.

Hang in there - summertime's coming!

I repainted the top of the car since I posted the pics.  The yellow was really off so I resprayed it.  Looks much better now.  I am almost done the car.  I was thinking I had until the end of April to be ready when I get a call yesterday asking if I want to take the car to Atlanta for 2 races in 2 weeks.  Oh yeah baby.  So you Atlanta boys look out.  Thery is another Crazy Canuck coming down :-)

'08 has been a rollercoaster so far!  Phillip finished his new car just in time for Winternationals in Orlando.  Tested fast, practiced fast; but Winternats Crashfest got us.  Brian Silas did an awesome General Lee imitation off our RR when the front of the field stacked up!  But I don't remember the 01 ever landing flat on his roof...  And - what was a guy in his 2nd full season in ARCA doing in Semi Pro anyway?  Glad he didn't get hurt - it was scary.  Brian had to come out the top; it squashed his doors shut.

Followed that up with yet another blown engine.  Number 4 in 12 months.  I love my builder (no names please!) but I'm goin' Sealed Engines from now on.

It was all made better this past weekend with a win at Lanier Speedway.  That's our biggest one in 4 years of doing this crazy stuff!

Still trying to lock down a painter for my car.  Have one guy that is supposed to call me but havn't heard from him yet.  Just priced out a total vinal wrap... $800 - $850 not including the fenders.   trying to decide which way to go.  Paint would be alot cheaper but then I have to buy the decals to put on.  hmmm choices, choices, choices.  Getting a bit nervous that nothings painted yet, racing season is coming fast.  Just ordered some saftey equipment yesterday from saferacer.com.  These guys were great to deal with, and cheap too.

Mike, the car looks great!!!

Joe, just do it yourself!
Compressor and gun-$300.00
Paint/Ready to spray primary colors-$40/gallon
Crazy colors like me-$80/gallon

Touching it up and making it pretty for the shows and parades and sponsor events yourself (free)...PRICELESS

Have you ever seen a wrap after a wreck? At least with paint and vinyl you can fix what you need fixed. Maybe Im biased because I have a plotter and do all my own vinyl work, so its extra cheap...
Just my .02

It was a day or so of futzing around in the shop for the shelves, then another half day hanging it all.  Now to make some doors for them.  Keep it all clean that way.

After painting the whole body white, the garage looked three times brighter.  That showed how much I need to put doors on it all and paint it all white.

Thanks,
Mike

Very nice

yeah, unfortunately... I had to make a decision... business or pleasure. well, the business is what will secure the family and fund the racing, so it had to be first... If I could find a bank to loan me the money for the car I'd be set...lol

As a business, you can deduct a lot of your costs as advertising. (See thread on sponsorship)
In essence, your race car is a rolling billboard. (Advertising)
You may want to check with your accountant as to what he will need from you to support the deductions.
Right off the get go, you already have start up costs of  just getting the business open that will be deductable.
I spent 30 years in business for myself. If I can help you further, send me an email. I'll try to help you with your questions.

I'm happy to help a fellow racer.

I guess I should have covered her up a bit.  ;D  Not only can everyone see her, it is a little chilly in the garage.  :o

Hope to have the body back on by next weekend if all goes right, just gotta scale her out and change the oil and she is ready for testing on the 19th and 20th.

I can not wait. I thought I did the peepee dance waiting for her to show up, and then again after she was here, but its way worse knowing that racing is less then a month away!!!

Has anybody on here started racing yet? Our first test and tune was cancelled for this weekend, hopefully we can get it in next weekend...one of the perils of running in the dirt here in Wisconsin.

Test and tune was a blast.  The track was kinda crappy most of the day but came around towards the end, it had alot more grip once the dust got blown off and rubber got laid down.   What an awesome car!! Man I wish I would have done this sooner.  The track was a 1/4 mile. My fastest lap time was 19.23 which isn't bad considering that most of the other cars were in the low 19's to very high 18's.   Didn't wreck nothin, chipped some paint, but hey its a race car right.

First race for me is My 3rd.  Different city but same size track.

Hi everyone,
My 7 year old son  and I have been racing go karts in Las Vegas for about 8 months and have been having so much fun that when I came across a great  legend/bando deal I had to buy them. my son won't be able to race until he is 8 but he is very excited already, I have not been able to wait so I am getting our feet wet this year at the bullring for a limited schedule. I have been learning a lot from everyone on this forum and I am very appreciative of all the information. Here is a link to our website that will do a better job of introducing my son and I than I can do with this post.

www.jwracinglv.com

This is an awesome site and I hope that in the future I can contribute to help someone else.

Thanks

Hey Joe, welcome to Legends Racer... I also live in Vegas, I was supposed to be running at the Bullring this year, but we started a business and I had to put the car on hold. I go to every race, however, and have seen you run. It's funny, I almost bought that car that you have now. This is an excellent place for info and advice. So once again, welcome!!

HI Joe,
I know in Legends, the minimum age is 14, but you can petition 600 to let you race at thirteen with documented previous racing experience...dont know if that applies to Bandos tho...just a thought

Thanks guys,

LunaticMark you will have to come by the pits one night and introduce yourself.

Steve, I had the car back together by the end of the week and raced it Saturday night. It wasn't as bad as it looked in the dark at the track that night.

VMS Motorsports, My son hasn't been racing long enough in karts to be able to run a Bando safely with the kids at the bullring, they are fast, we are working on his car control at the kart track and will be taking his bando out to some parking lots as he gets better over this year. I want him to have fun and not get scared before he even gets started. He is already pushing me to take it to a parking lot, Soon.

I for sure will come out there... what pit stall do you have?? Also, this is just a thought, but try asking Joe if you can bring the bando out on one of the school days and get practice in for your son... I go out there quite often and play with the school cars... Joe is still trying to get me into a Thunder Roadster though... lol. I don't know yet about that, I will have to test one before I make up my mind.

I don't have my own pit stall. I am usually at the east end of the first row ( back 40) Look for the 24' trailer on the blue/grey Chevy Silverado I dont have anything on my trailer yet but that will change soon. I did ask Joe and it is an insurance thing because of his age which I respect. Look forward to meeting you. I will be there this Friday and Saturday to ride along behind and get some seat time and experience (crash avoidance Training) ;D

I got the opportunity to get out into the Bullring's "back 40" area of the pits and got meet Joe last night... Super nice guy, very down to earth and just an all around great racing guy. Helped him load his Legend into the trailer... he also had his 2 karts out in the pits. He's doing a great job on the track learning and getting the car set-up for him. It'll be great to watch him race... well at least until my car is here and ready, then I'll be sure to wave as I pass you... hahaha!!!

Ok..... first race of the season is over!!!!

11 cars showed up.  Started 5th in my heat finished 4th.
Drew 6th for the feature, ran as far up as 3rd but do to lap traffic I ended up 6th.   I'm actually surprised I did so well.  I ran good in the pack of cars also.  Nerves are all gone and I'm very comfy in the car.   Ran right with the fast cars.

I wish I would have started legends car racing sooner!!!!!

Next race may 24th same track, so we will see if we can improve a bit.

Thanks guys for all who helped me with my questions.

Well, hopefully things get turned around tonight. So far this season we have:
--4th in the heat/main rained out
--last (8th) in the heat/20th out of 24 in the "A" Main (wreck), and
--5th in the heat/19th out of 20 in the "A" Main (wrecked in heat, patched together for the "A" and got wrecked before the green/black-flagged for bumper (and left rear frame horn) coming off).

Going to a different track tonight, so hopefully the bad luck bug will stay back here!!!

I have 4 Legends car dirt races under my belt and I still have a long way to go as far as learning.  Its amazing how different the track is every race and how much that changes the way you have to drive the car.  Luckily the car was already setup so I have just been focusing on driving and havent touched the setup.  So far I have two 7th places and a 12th and 13th place.  I have had to start last every race this past week was my own doing though.  With our club you have to start at the back of all races for the first three race nights.  This past week was my first night not having to start last but I got run over in my heat race and finished last so I started last in the feature.  Hopefully this week will be better, we are back in Beaver Dam which is my favorite track of the three we have been too.

I had everything on the motor ready, carbs re-jetted, new braided fuel line in, was all ready to finally hear the motor run and the fuel pump is now dead.  All of the wiring checked out, so pulled the pump and held the leads up to a battery and nothing.  Not sure how it died in the last few months from just sitting there. >:(  Hope to have the new one in a few days.  I'll try to get some pics this week.  The paint turned out pretty good, but I want to buff it to shine it up a little more.  Shooting for my first race June 27th.  I was just going to patch a few spots and spray on new paint, but I've gotten a little OCD about the body work.   :)

Jeff,
Good to hear that you are getting some seat time, and trying different tracks.
'Til you get it figured out, you might need to start in back for a bit longer. Better to bring yourself, and the car, home in one piece. Sounds like your having a good time!
 Best Of Luck!
  Steve

John,
Funny how that OCD gets the best of us. :)
As for the pump; Maybe it was about to give up on you. Better to find out before you get to the track.
Look forward to those pics!
 Best Of Luck!

We are getting 20-24 cars at each race so starting in the back is not a good thing.  I am fast enough to run in the top 5 as I was two weeks ago before someone spun in front of me on the last lap putting me back to 7th, I just run out of time trying to pass the slower cars.  I was running 3rd in the heat this week when I got run over going into the corner which tore my fender off and I pulled off because I wanted to check for damage.  The funny thing is that my three weeks of starting in the back I never started dead last until this week when I started dead last, my first week of being able to start where I was assigned.  The main thing is that I am having fun and saving a ton of money over racing my late model.  I hope to try out some asphalt in a week or too, I think I should be competetive from the get go.  I am looking forward to not having to wash the car after that race.

Don't know why they call it dirt.  ???

Besides tire pressures and spring rates; Any thoughts as to other changes you will make?

Title: Re: How You Doing In 2008

I have a set of coil overs that will be setup for asphalt so that I can change things over quickly.  I plan to change tires(cut for asphalt, uncut for dirt) and springs/shocks.  I will see if I need to make any other changes but thats all I am planning on right now.

We raced in WI on the dirt.  The track was really dry all night, I got my car hooked up on the outside and finished 5th.  The top 5 got their compression checked, mine was 150 across the board.  I think that I may have to turn mine up a bit.

Ok all 3rd race day in the car and I finished  14th out of 18 (40 lap main 1/4 mile banked asphalt oval)

P.S. First race day just got a few laps into the main before 2 spins they sent me off the track.
Second race day new track and a few laps into the main I just lost it coming out of turn two four wheel drift into the wall ($200 to fix)

Things have been going great in our Bandolero program. I wish I could say the same for the Legends. last Sunday (June 22) I was turned by another driver coming off a corner and hit he wall at about 70 mph. My dad coming through the pack collected the car that turned me ripped off his right front wheel. He then bounced off of him and hit me in the back end. I was able to get his car fixed through the week and I started in his car last night. Half way through the heat race I blew up the engine. This week I will be swaping the engine from my twisted wreck of a car into his and hopefully be able to complete a race.

Brad has been getting better every race in the Bando. His biggest problem is on the starts and not being able to anticipate the green flag. He usually loses 6-8 car lengths and then makes it back up under the green. He is being consistantly in the top ten out of 15 cars.

We got rained on at 3:00pm and they cancelled the races, it was clear from 3:30pm on and was a perfect night for racing.

We busted our butts getting the second car ready to race but we will have to wait a couple weeks to get the second car out.

Jeff,
Why was the track so quick to shut down?
Did it just dump a ton of rain on the track and they didn't think they could get it dry in time??
I know we have had issues with time here. Track limits the time that races must end. I think is was a compromise to keep the city council happy.
I  just don't understand why people would build houses near a race track (or airport) that has been there for 50 years, and then complain about it.
For sure, there has been some crazy weather these past few years!
I hope you get the chance to get both cars out there soon.

 Best of Luck,

 Steve

I had a great holiday weekend.  Friday night we raced at Nodak Speedway in Minot, ND.  Didn't do very well as I finished the feature in 10th place (out of 13 cars) but had a great time anyway.  Saturday night got to go to Southwest Speedway in Dickinson, ND - my favorite track.  We only get to race there twice each year and I really look forward to it.  I won my heat race.  I spun out on my own trying to get by someone (I think it was only the third time I have spun out on my own in 2 1/2 years) and finished a distant 7th in the trophy dash.  In the feature I got spun out, got my place back and continued on.  I had an exciting 3 way side by side by side finish for 3rd, 4th and 5th.  When the flag flew, I didn't know who finished where, but found out I got 5th (out of 13 cars again).  Wow - what a blast.  I ran in third for 10 laps or so and was right on the tail of 2nd place - a very good run for me as I don't often keep up with the leaders that well.  And best of all, loaded the car up in one piece again, which I was worried about as I spun around and saw 6 cars coming right at me.  I can't wait to go back there in September.

After getting crashed out on Friday I came to the regional qualifier Sat. looking for a good run.  I finished 3rd in my heat which transfered me to the A main where I started 6th.  I had a good start and got into a good spot running 5th behind the masters and was set to ride there.  On lap 20 of 30 I got spun and had to restart 17th, in the last 10 laps I passed 8 cars to finish 9th and was the top Semi Pro.  I had a really fun three wide battle with 2 to go to get 9th, very fun race on a rather rough track.

Saturday wasn't as good as Friday  :'(
Started on the pole for the heat and got beat up pretty bad by the outside car, slammed into me at least 3 times in the first lap, which finally sent me down into the car passing on the lowside, then back to the guy on the highside....Legends Pinball! Ended up 5th, so I had to run the B main. Upon inspection, found 2 bent rims and a bent panhard bar and trailing arm, so the right rear is leading about 1/2 inch, but didnt have time to fix anything before the B. Somehow finished 3rd in the B to transfer to the A. Started 19th of 20 in the A, somehow made it up to 10th, and spun myself on lap 24. Back to the back of the pack again! Made it BACK up to 11th and had to be a show off cuz all the family and a couple sponsors were in the stands, so I took it 4 wide on the outside in turn 3 on the last lap and spun myself again...finished 16th. UGH! I really need to find the edge and just teeter on it!  Went outside Sunday morning and my driveway is covered in gear lube...hopefull its just the axle seal...anyone have a part # for the seal or is it a 600 specific unit? Is there an inner and an outer?

Sorry to hear that you had to put up with someone bouncing off of your car like that.  Dirt track racing is a contact sport, but there are limits.  If someone drives like that, it usually comes back around.

Make sure to check that the rear end housing isn't bent.  Can you tell where it is leaking from?

Havent looked at it yet...car and trailer are locked in the garage until I get the 15 yards of mulch that were delivered this morning out of the way and where it is supposed to be. I just figured Id get the seals coming since it'll be the 2nd time apart in a month anyway. We're off this week, so I have lots of time!

50 shirts, 6 hooded sweatshirts, and artwork came to just under $1000.00, it took him like 3 months though because it was early in the year and everyone was ordering. Re-did the art 4 times with some petty stuff without a complaint though

This comes from our friend Vaeron from Greece:

Up to now I have participated to three races (the Clubs championship), and I have won the two of them.
I haven't found yet the way of thinking for the setup of the car, because is something new for me (I am an old Kart driver).
These kind of races are only three lap time races. Everybody is very excited with the legend car, and most of them require for more information.
You will find enclosed a link of Youtube of one race (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZn_dGNRxso).

Well, my season sucks so far this year with the exception of 2 top 10's, one being a 7th overall/1st in semi-pro. Other than that, between my own driver inexperience and others, its been a rough and expensive year...here's a couple pics...top is me and Jeff (racinjj)...bottom one is me and Dallas (djracing)...he's the orange car...dont think he has a pic in his profile.

Not so good of a weekend. Just to put it plain a simple"got tore up". Started fourth in a 24 car A main (30cars all together)and some guy from row 3 thought he could win in the first turn on the first lap. Oh well, she is going back togeter already. Still finished 19th and the thing would hardly steer.

2 top 10's this weekend...7th Friday and 10th Saturday...funny when you look at the 600 points, we have so many semi-pro drivers (a couple that shouldn't be...like you Jeff!  ;D ) that I still only got a 4th and a 5th in semi-pro points...not that it matters, we probably wont even get the 20 races in this year! I guess its good that we are getting more people into the sport tho!

Lol Jim, I know I really shouldnt be a semi pro but I sure am not good enough to be a pro yet.  I am planning a road trip to get some more dirt races just in case we get another rain out.  I think I have a decent shot at the national championsip if I keep the class win streak going but we cant have anymore rain outs!

I am on a string of 3 top fives and I am really starting to get the car figured out.  I finally got a heat race win this past Saturday, I never cared about them in the late model.  I dont know how many heat race and trophy dash wins I have but its got to be about 20 or so.  But this was my first win on dirt so I was pretty pumped.  Hopefully by the end of the summer I can be in contention to win a feature but thats a stretch with the awesome talent I race with.

I know I have been a little quiet on the forum since race season started.  We have had so much going on.  We are now offering shop and set up services.  We had our first clietn last night to get a gear change done in the car.

As for the racing part I have been focused on our State championship as my goal for the year.  We have had 5 rain outs compaired to the other series which has only 2.  I am going to have to visit some other tracks to make up those dates.  I hope I don't jinx anything but I am currently leading out state championship.

Just ribbing ya... Jeff "Superstar" Steenbergen, it is odd that they put you in 'semi' though, with 8 years of prior experience and 'stepping down' to our series...600 website states that "The Semi-Pro Division is the novice class, featuring the drivers that are new to the sport or have been inactive in other forms of racing for a while" You might be doing better in points if you were listed as "pro", since we only have 3 pro drivers, Joey, Joel, and Brian, plus Bethany, but she hasnt been around much this year...top 4 in class no matter what ya do!...anyway, I'll let that go for now  ;)
Where are you going to travel to? I was thinking about the 3 day swing through North Dakota at the end of August, but it falls on the last night at Charter, so I dont think I'll do it...unless theres 100% guaranteed rain here! Grant looked good this weekend for his first times out.

See you Saturday for the World of Outlaws show

Note to the rest of the forum...I am not part of the "awesome talent" that Jeff referred to in his post  ;D :D :) :-[ :'(

Going into this I figured I would be in the Pro class but everyone I talked to told me to sign up for Semi-Pro.

I was looking at the ND races too but I dont want to miss a WLDRS race.  Right now my only race scheduled is 8-22 at Davenport, IA but I am still looking at Sept. to see if I can find something else.  If anyone knows of some dirt racing in Sept. around the midwest let me know.

Little bit behind in posts in this thread, but I'll start off with my first night at the track. Charter Raceway Park, same as Jim and Jeff.

July 5, to start off I only live about 8 miles from the track. So I borrowed a barely big enough trailer for a Legend car to get to the track. And by barely big enough I mean the bumpers where hanging off and it was scary to load and unload.  ;D  So I go and line up for some hot laps. My turn to go out and just my luck the engine won't turn over  :-\ yeah I forgot to charge the battery before I left so it died. Rolled the car back to the pit, and was able to hook up Jeff's battery charger before the heat races.

I had some fun in my heat race. I got to miss a wreck and race with someone. I ended up 6th, but I got beat for 5th by only a foot or two. That put me in the B main with 12 cars total. The b mains are 15 laps long and I was glad that I was going to get some extra laps. The car never felt right to me. Tight in, loose off but I was just trying to make laps. I had a spin off turn 4 with 6 laps to go, but didn't hit anything or get hit.

So good night, didn't have to fix anything for the next one.

Yeah DJ you did an awesome job in the B-main!  You really dominated that race, I dont know where you picked up the speed from but you looked awesome.  Also you did a great job of hanging on to the car after the axle broke.  I had an axle break in my late model twice and that is a big handful.  Keep up the good work and paint your car ;D

July 19 - Second race ever. Basically I was just trying to get all the laps in without crashing :) Finished last in my heat with a car that still felt way off setup wise. Talked to a few drivers changed all 4 tire pressures and went out and finished 12th in the A main. First time making the A and I got all the laps in and felt up to speed.

July 25 - Decided to travel up to Chilton and race on a little quarter mile track that I have never seen before. Came with a complete different setup, all 4 springs, ride height, pinion angle, most everything was changed. Got 6th in my heat, took the whole race to get used to the track and how to drive it. Was really loose too. We ended up measuring all the tires and found out I had a + 1/2 inch of stagger in the car. Ended up racing with - 1/8 stagger after we moved some tires around. Helped a lot in the feature. Was really good in 3 and 4 but tight in 1 and 2. Maybe I just couldn't find a line that was good for me. I did get comfortable flying into the turns sideways and not hardly touching the brake. That ended up helping me Saturday night :)

Don't worry guys I got video of that B - main. The first 12 laps at least, the video stopped in turn 4 when that axle broke. I will brag in my next post with links to that video and one from Chilton.

Hey there VMS,  It is good to hear you are thinking of making a trip to ND.  I hope you can make it.  If you can't make it for August 29 - 31 in Minot, we have a few races the next weekend.  Thursday, Sept 4th in Wishek (South central part of the state) - a very nice smaller track (big 1/4 mile I think) and then a 2 day show on Saturday & Sunday, Sept 6 & 7 in Dickinson on the Western border of the state.  That is a nice 3/8 mile track.  It is a  tossup on which one of these tracks is my favorite to race on.   Also, on Saturday, Sept 13th we have a race in Grand Forks (Eastern border) so that would be a lot closer and give you some weekend travel time.  We don't normally race there - it is a special event for us.  I understand it is a 1/4 mile track, but I have never seen it.  It should be a fun time and I don't expect there to be a lot of cars as it is a long trip for us to make.

I plan to head to Cedar Lake Speedway for their big Badger Nationals Sept 26 & 27.  Maybe we will get a chance to meet up face to face at one of these races.

Race safe.

Been finishing races all yr.  Average around the 10th i would guess.  Had a few top 10s and acouple below that.  But I have been starting to feel alot more comfortable in the car.  Had a blast in Dickinson ND, on july 5th.  Finished 7th but ran hard and also ran with the top guys.  Big double header this weekend in Mandan ND, the Govenors classic is one of the biggest race weekends in ND.  Changed my setup a bit so hopefully it will help out.  One thing I did find out though this season is that the bigger steering wheel is the way to go.  Way more control.

Later guys.... stay safe

The Legends cars will be the support class for the World of Outlaws in Mandan on August 16th.  The club is checking to find out if they will be limiting the number of cars we can run, so it might not be open to all.  I will let you know when I find something out.  Do they limit the number of Legends cars they race with the WoO at Beaver Dam??

I believe the INEX rule is 24 cars on the track unless you recieve a special exemption...I know alot of people didnt make the show for the WoO last year...including me (wrecked by an asphalt guy...his first time on dirt). Our WoO show is this Saturday...come on up! We are racing Sept 5th and 7th, so that wont work either...

Yea we only start 24 cars. That makes it hard when you have 30 or 40 cars that show up. We have a b main but sometimes it is only 8 laps so if you start deep in the field your screwed.

8 laps is crazy for a "b"...ours are 15 laps, Ive seen other tracks that will run as many laps as cars, ie 10 cars in the b equals 10 laps...

Most dirt tracks in this area only run 8 to 10 laps for semi/b main races for all classes.

Saturday wasn't to bad......qualified in for the show so that pleased me and I was running well with the middle of the pack in the a-main.....that was until I lost the bead on the right rear tire...again...1st DNF in over 2 1/2 years!!! Guess its time for new tires!
Title: Re: How You Doing In 2008
Post by: VMS Motorsports on August 04, 2008, 10:53:17 am
no, it's time for more air pressure...or bead-locks (Hey Darrell Krentz...you reading this?!?!?!) I lost my right rear also...3rd time this year, second time since I bought fresh rubber...you probably hit the crater in the middle of 3. I took 2nd in my heat and was battling for 2nd when me and another car got together and I bent the steering rack bracket...car was a handful after that, until I lost the right rear on lap 18...finished 15th.  :(   drove around on 3 tires for 2 laps hoping someone else would pull off but nobody did.
Title: Re: How You Doing In 2008
Post by: Openwheeler37 on August 04, 2008, 11:44:51 am
Thought it might be an air pressure problem, but jeff and I run the same set up and he doesnt have any problems.
We also dimpled the rim. The tires ae rock hard anyays and after running 2 laps with it just hanging on the rim, im sure the tire is damaged too.
Title: Re: How You Doing In 2008
Post by: Racinjj on August 04, 2008, 12:45:35 pm
We are running 11psi in the RR which shouldnt be in issue.  I ran 9psi earlier this year without a problem but didnt feel safe and changed to 11.  Since I got new tires and dimpled the the RR rim I havent had any issues and I really hammer on my RR.

As far as an update, Saturday went well at the WoO show, finished 2nd in my heat.  In the feature started 3rd row outside and got into the lead on the 2nd lap and lead 10 or 11 laps before our 2 top masters caught and passed me.  i was able to hang with them and on a late restart pulled along side of second place but he came up and I jumped his RR and lost a little momentum.  Ended up 3rd, I am very happy with that being my highest finish at Charter.
Title: Re: How You Doing In 2008
Post by: VMS Motorsports on August 04, 2008, 01:10:44 pm
I usually run 9 in the RR, but bumped it to 10 after seeing the track open up in 3 throughout the night...guess I should go higher...still trying to decide what to do with the rim...dimple, weld, cross-hatch, or screw....hmmmmmmm :-\
Did you do Luxemburg this year? Be prepared, it was very rough on equipment...people were running 15 on the right side and still losing tires and bottoming out so hard at least 3 guys got black flagged in their heats for having the bumpers ripped off by the ruts in the track!
Title: Re: How You Doing In 2008
Post by: Racinjj on August 04, 2008, 01:50:47 pm
Yeah, I was at Luxemburg.  I was running 9psi in my RR, I dont know how that stayed on.  I am very tempted to do the screw trick but cant bring myself to drilling holes in my new wheels.  We may end up doing that to Grants wheels but will give the dimple a try with his new tire since it works good with my new tires.
Title: Re: How You Doing In 2008
Post by: VMS Motorsports on August 04, 2008, 01:57:59 pm
I had 12 PSI RR for the heat and lost the tire...still finished ahead of 3 other cars who fared worse! They say that the track isnt normally that rough...See you there

Do you think there would be any benefit to using an innertube?
Title: Re: How You Doing In 2008
Post by: JGRacing on August 04, 2008, 04:02:35 pm
I ran tubes back in the street stock days (could not use beadlocks) and cut them constantly.  I would make sure that the wheel and inside of the tire were clean, cover the tube in a ton of baby powder, and still had problems.  With the low PSI, it usually was an issue with the tube rubbing against the tire, a little bit of debris rubbing the tube, or the tire twisting on the rim (even just a little bit) and would cut the valve stem.  I was able to go a little lower on air pressure, but had some serious issue with reliability.  Maybe there is a racing tube that is stronger than the stock ones I used.

With the screw idea, it would help keep the tire from twisting, but not sure that it would help keep it from pulling off of the rim in the turn.

I'd love to see right rear beadlocks become legal.

Well, I was able to load the car on the trailer with no noticeable damage again.

Started 4th in my heat and ran decent. I don't know about you guys but my car was way loose in the heat again. I was able to stay in the transfer spot for a few laps but went back to 5th. Decided to try and get 4th going into turn 3 coming to get the checkered and lost it in the middle of the turn. Got 7th which ended up putting me in the back of the B main. Tighten the car way up for the B main, started 9th took me several laps to work traffic though. I couldn't run the bottom but up top was great. I found that ditch in going into turn 3 on lap 2 and made sure not to hit it again lol. Got to 5th and I could see 2nd through 4th and they were getting bigger/closer every lap but I ran out of time.

In some other good news I got my first Top 10 last week, or at least they paid me for finishing 10th :P

Yeah, I dont know what happened with scoring, Im still listed as 10th, but on the payout sheet Im 9th for last week. Somebody said the 48 was a lap down, but they still have him in 9th and me in 10th on the website...?

Yes DJ you lost points since you didnt make the feature this week.  I think thats a really good system, it will make you try a lot harder to make the feature. LOL
Just kidding they said their points program was all screwed up a couple of weeks ago and it looks like its not fixed yet.   The 48 was a lap down last week because he spun under green and lost a lap.

I'm not a big one to "blow my own horn" so to speak,  and I am pretty much a middle of the pack racer so I don't often have much to blow my horn over, but this weekend we had our annual 2 day ND Governor's Stock Car Classic and I had a weekend that a lot of guys would dream about - but probably not the guys who are accustomed to winning.   Saturday night I placed 4th in the feature - my best finish in 2 1/2 years of racing.  Then last night, I finished in 2nd place, taking home $350 for the weekend.  Wow - was that fun!!!   And to top it all off, I won the runner-up trophy for the weekend.  Man, I didn't even dream that I could have that good of  a weekend.    I had great luck in my draws and my car handled great all weekend long.  Anyway, that's enough about me.

A 4th and a 5th again this weekend, I am really starting to get the car figured out.  Grants car isnt too bad, all the bolton stuff on the RF is junk and of course the stub is tweaked but we can get it fixed.

I heard they called you into tech Jim, what was that all about?

stub is tweeked but with Jeff on my side, we should be able to have it ready! Its a shame it happened too, I was
really starting to have fun. I got my line figured out and was realy starting to drive through the field. Guess ill just hae to try again next week!

I was able to make my first 5 races without any contact with another car. My last race I rubbed on two different cars in the heat race. Hit one of those big tires in the infield, and got slammed into hard enough to bend the rear end where you bolt the bumper on.

Overall once I get that back end straight enough to get a bumper on and tape up the rf fender not too much damage.

Now I have to find something that can convert .mov (quicktime) video into something I can compress and upload. My dad recorded part of the A main and Grant you did get some air.

I hear from the stands that I negotiated through that wreck quite well...its one of those deals where you just stay off the brake and let instincts kick in and it didnt seem like a big deal at the time, but I guess it looked good from the other side of the fence  :o

Official scoring adjustment from Saturday: started 20th, finished 11th, DQ'd post race for having my muffler torn off after being hit, awarded 17th.  Quite a hit on double points night! Oh well, at least the muffler and header pipe look fixable!  :)

Unfortunately Jim had a very wild flip tonight, I will let him fill in the details.  Jim is doing good, the same cant be said for the car.

I spun out fighting for the lead, then spun out a couple laps later after my RR when flat.  Bad night all around except for Grant who finished 7th, his first top 10.

Season is over, car is junk.

Was hit and spun in the heat, so I needed to start in the rear for the A.

Passed a couple cars on the outside in 1&2, car was fast. A skirmish happened in front of the pack, everyone checked up, and one car pulled up high to avoid it, I jumped his right rear with my left front, and dont remember much after that. Im told that I went end over end at least twice, and was later shown where I broke the catch fence post and tore the fence apart about 10 feet off the ground. After coming off the fence I landed on the guard rail and began barrel rolling, ended up on my roof with fuel pouring in on me from the carbs being torn off. Thinking back now, that was the scariest part . They couldnt get either door open and I was soaked in fuel...I guess we cant think of what might have been, but it makes you realize whats important in life.

Anyway, Im fine, pretty sore and bruised from the belts doing their job, but physically Im good. Mentally and emotionally Im trashed worse than the car, but that will pass. Spending the day with my wife and kids today, the worst part is I had finally convinced my wife to let me bring my son into the pits tonght since we are racing the modified, I was supposed to be racing, and a friend of ours is running his Sprint car. We still have to go because its the first race with the modified, but my hearts not into it right now.

Sorry to hear about the car but glad you are OK.  It could have been a lot worse from the sound of it.

This has me thinking about those quick release pins on the door hinges that came up a while back.  Has anyone come up with something that INEX has approved?

Hey Jim,

Really sorry to hear about your wreck.  I'm just glad you are home and able to write about it.  It could have been a hell of a lot worse - especially with the fuel spilling all over.  Fire is the thing that worries me most about this.

Take care and I hope to see you on the track next season.

Was able to see one video of it from the front stretch grandstands (VHS, so I cant post it...DJ, did you guys get it???), but after watching it, wow...I dont know what to say. Greg (#76) has been racing longer than Ive been alive, (Im 34)and he told me it was the most violent wreck he's ever seen because of the speed of the rotation of the car. Everyone who told me I was barrel rolling and going end over end were right, except it was at the same time. The car was going end over end and spinning, stopped when it broke the safety fence post, and dropped me onto my roof.

I dont know what to say...All I can say is that we can bash 600 and INEX all we want, Im one of the biggest offenders as many of you know, but they built a hell of a race car where it mattered...the entire cockpit looks like it did when I bought it.

Gotta say, after going to the track last night and watching you guys out there without me, I wont be coming back as a spectator again. I think if my son wasnt there I would have cried...The car is coming apart next week and the rebuilding will begin. Watch out next year boys...and Brian, we will find the time to make it down by you in 09!

Thanks for a great rookie season...wish I could have finished it!

Jim

Let me know if you get time to go to North Dakota to race with Brian next year.
I'd love to come over and watch you guys and meet you both in person.

Take Care,

The car looks really good for what it went through.  From the initial once over, does the engine look like it survived?
Title: Re: How You Doing In 2008

I dont think so...the pictures really dont do it justice. One of the times it came down nose first it must have been just past vertical after everything was torn away because all of the engine seals got forced into the engine by the impact of the clay, forcing clay inside...it also has no oil in it...either way its got to come apart. Im going to start breaking the car down later this week (I hope) and see whats salvageable. If  the chassis is too bad, i.e. hidden damage to the cage, I might just buy another car with a sealed motor so I dont have any problems if any more rule changes pop up...for the price of a chassis and a 1250, you can get a nice used car...Have to get the garage cleared out first though....I have a really good frame/chassis guy, but I dont want to mess around when it comes to safety.

I sure hope that Jason got some good pics of your Superman move Jim.  I always said after I wrecked big that if I get nothing else I want some good pictures or footage out of it.  I had a good one last year at Rockford with my late model, I made thier TV commercial this year!
I knew after I saw the 48 spining it would be trouble.  You would have thought that after causing a big wreck last week he would have learned.

I know how you felt coming to the races Saturday.  I just dont go to the races after I wreck a car, its too painful, luckily my big wrecks have been the last couple weeks of the season.  It makes the offseason that much longer and more unbearable though.

I dont think he did ... he was shooting the front of the pack, and by the time he realized what was going on, he said he might have gotten the end of it, but he doesnt know. He said he'd post whatever he got on the website... Got a video from Gregs wife that shows it all, its from the front stretch grandstands though, so theres not alot of detail. Jimbo hasnt checked his vidoes yet, he's going to let me know later today. DJ's video would have been great but the flagman was between me and the camera...and Eric thinks he's got most of it since he was just in front of me...I'll hopefully have something postable soon!

Got 8th in Chilton, could have been 7th if it weren't for the #37 getting me outta turn 4 last lap. And 14th on Saturday, fighting a tight race car which was brought on by me screwing up on the stagger that I wanted.

On Friday as you saw in the video I sent you Jim, the #48 almost caused a big one off turn 4, I think he got part of Grant at least. Then off turn 2, I'm already three-quarters way past him on the straightaway and he slams my LR.... darts to the infield and that's what I think caused it. That part you can see in the video, because when he hit me it pulled me left.

Those pictures are wild.

Chance,
Sorry! Forgot to congratulate you on your wins!
At this rate, you are going to have build a bigger trophy cabinet.  ;) ;D

Steve

For those that don't know yet, I cut the end of my left index finger off. Wish I had a fantastic story for you.... Like fighting off a grizzly bear, or I poked a mountain lion in the nose.... No Such Luck! Mine is a story of Real Stupidity!!!
I was having some kind of problem with my scooter; grinding noise. I was trying to locate the source of the noise. With the bike running, I grabbed a rag and was trying to carefully clean up some parts and the chain. Needless to say; the rag gets caught and drags my finger through the chain and sprocket. Cut it off at the beginning of the finger nail. A trip to the Emergency Room yielded one finger sewn back on.
That was about 3 weeks ago. Even had to go to work that night and the next 2 days, before work decided that maybe I should be giving it time to heal.  :o Brilliant idea Boss!!!  ::) Took 2 weeks vacation time, then went back to work. Worked 32 hours in 3 days. Yesterday, I was asked to stop by; I thought to discuss my work schedule and an inquiery as to how my finger was healing. Instead; They fired me because they claim "I have not been doing my job properly. And they have recieved several complaints."   BULL!!!!  I have always been the guy they call when they need someone to cover a shift or work overtime! My residents love me, as well as their family members!!! I've never called in sick or missed a day of work. I guess I wasn't good employee.  ??? It will be their loss.
The finger is healing slowly. It's got good color, and I even have a bit of feeling in the tip of it. My scooter still isn't on the road and I have no other transportation.
(Did I mention that it is a 7 mile walk to work ?) Anyway, I have some prospects for work that will be a lot closer to home. CNA's are always in demand so it shouldn't be too hard to find a job.

Take Care and Be Safe,

Steve

Got 6th in my heat, car still too tight for a wet track. By my count only 22 cars were there but they had a B main anyway. Transferred, only ran hard the first 5 laps out of the 15 in the B main. Used the other laps to try different lines and try and figure things out. As the night goes on and the track dries out the car comes to me.

Fairly rough track for the A main, started last, stayed up high and felt like I had a fast car for once. I was around 12th when we got a yellow about 9 laps in I think. On the next restart I was on the inside and the #48 up high, and going into turn 3 the next lap I lifted early to get off the bottom and up to the middle so I could get around this guy. I knew we would run side by side for several laps if I stayed low because I couldn't drive off as well. So I let him go into turn 3 and he loses it like he usually does... I should have stayed on the bottom. So I get into his RF, I was too close to stop and couldn't miss him.  The contact bent something on his car and I only broke a bumper tab as far as I can tell which isn't bad at all. Ended up 18th because I wasn't sure if something else was bent on the car and pulled off after the wreck. The #48 stayed on the track and wrecks another car on the last lap. After the race I went and asked the #48 what happened out of turn 4 and basically he said "it wasn't his fault he spun... and he bent a steering arm because I hit him.." like it was my fault.

This is the same car that self spun in the first 3 nights that I raced. Same car that caused the mess in Chilton, and someone from another crew told me he flipped his car earlier this year also. Not sure that's true but wow, this guy wrecks a lot. I'll do my best to stay away from this guy.
Title: Re: How You Doing In 2008
Post by: VMS Motorsports on August 24, 2008, 06:11:28 pm
Yeah, he flipped earlier in the year...that was my first trip to the frame shop...he hit me when  I was parked in the turn after being spun and everyone managed to miss me but him..He''ll get better with more seat time, I think he's spending too much $$ on motor and not spending enough time in the car, my .02, which don't amount to much since Im not racing...  :-\

Its been rather dead lately, whats going on?

I took my Legends car with me to practice on an asphalt track for the first time.  I left my soft dirt springs on and just put an old hard set of cut tires on.  The car was really twitchy like I thought it would be but overall it was fun.  I let my Dad and Grant take it for a spin, which Grant literaly did.  It was fun but the main goal was trying to work some bugs out of my new midget before the race on Sunday.  It started jumping out of gear after I got a brake line issue corected so it didnt go well.  I know what I have to do to fix it so hopefully my race will go well this weekend.

Hopefully the last race of the season for us at Charter Raceway goes well as I have lost way to many points over the last 3 weeks.  Grant and I both got our RR tires glued on and are ready to go.  Grant still isnt done putting his car back together though, he is making a career out of it ;D  He is taking his time making sure he gets it one right so we dont have a repeat of his Iowa situation.

It will be interesting to see what progress is made on those RR tires. Hope all goes well!

Saturday wasnt to bad.....I came home in one piece anyays....and thats better then the past weeks. The sarted of good. I was having a good run and was staying with the lead cars. The main wasnt so nice. I started 15th and was working my way through the pack un til my car developed a push. I began to fall back from the lead pack so I tried driving harder into the corner and ended up spinning out on the last lap. After talking with some of the other drivers I guess the groove ended up moving up aon the track and my lack of experience was unable read the track. So over all, not a great night, but the car is all in one piece! Jeff on the other hand had a great night by winning the feature!!!...Show off! ;D

I hope everyone had a good, and safe, holiday weekend!
Mine has been pretty quiet. Cold and raining here in Montana.
My finger is healing pretty well. I have some feeling in it, so that is a plus. I go to the doctor on the 9th.
Finally get my garage tomorrow! I'm pretty excited about that!!! Just a 10 x 20, but will give me some room to work out of the weather.
Going to get busy with the job hunting tomorrow.
Got a PM from Geoff. He just returned from a trip to Ohio to pick up another Legends Car. Hope to have pics soon.
Heard from Admin. also. Trey did not race this year. Hopes to be back next season. Looking forward to that!  Tom has been busy with a new go kart class.

I won the feature on Saturday night at Charter Raceway Park, the final race of the season there.  The car was perfect, hooked up on the outside just riding the cushion.  It was very fun and rewarding to beat some of the best dirt Legends racers in the country and I am only the 4th different winner there this season.

Sunday I switched the car over to try out asphalt for the first time with the Legends at Grundy county speedway.  The car was loose and I couldnt get it tightened up enough and I had too hard of tires to really be a contender.  I ended up 8th in the heat race and 11th in the feature out of 13 cars.  It was fun and at least I got to race after driving 3.5 hours and having big time problems with the midget.

Good Job Jeff "semi-pro" Steenbergen!!!  ::)  Did you get the midget straightened out? Talk to brad weber or Joel Wyttenbach, brad used to race them and I think Joel still does once in a while. Either that or try Don Gillham, he's close to the Fiscus clan, Aaron actually ran Don's backup car when we ran Sun prairie last year. Good luck in the rest of the shows! See you next year

Another 6th place in my heat and another B-main that I finished 4th in. Got 14th in the A, took me 18 laps to pass one car  ;D but I got him. Looking forward to Chilton on Friday as it might be my last race this year because I doubt I will be able to race Sunday night or the Badger Nationals work related crap. Congrats on the win Jeff.
Title: Re: How You Doing In 2008

Friday 9-5-08 at Chilton, WI was a decent night.  I finished 2nd in my heat and 5th in the feature.  The car was fast at the begining of the feature but after a couple yellows it picked up a push and I ended up losing 4th place in the last few laps.  I checked air pressure after the feature and the LR and RF had gained 1/2lbs more than the LF and RR which would explain the push.  I have now switched to nitrogen and may adjust my tire pressure starting points if this issue continues.  Note: the track was very wet and tacky not dry slick.
I have noticed this the last couple of races that have had long cautions when they make us sit stationary on the track.  It doesnt make any sense to me why those two tires would gain more.  It may just be me but I can really feel 1/2lbs of  tire pressure change.  Earlier in the season I could change 2lbs and not feel it but now that I am really getting a feel for the car its amazing how I can feel the small changes.

My thought pattern may be off, but considering the weight of the cars, size of tires, etc...a .5 pound change would be like a 20 pound spring change...I think...  ???
Title: Re: How You Doing In 2008

Showed up a little late to Chilton, started last in my heat and finished 6th which is the sweet spot. Started first in the feature and led the first 5 laps. Sailed into turn 3 way to hard and lost the lead and got passed by a lot of cars. Finished 8th. My car got looser the longer the race went on. I almost spun into the infield out of turn 2 part way through the race. My RF went up 1.5 lbs, and the RR went up 2 lbs. Lefts went up evenly.

Last year I finished 8th and got paid $70.  The Nationals doesn't pay well at all, but it sure is a lot of fun to go.  I have gone to the last 2 Dirt Nationals and had a lot of fun both times.  I wish I could make it this year, but with a new job and little vacation time and a LONG way to travel, it just isn't going to happen this year.  I'm hoping there is a great turnout for the Badger State Nationals and that will have to do for this year.

Jeff,

I didn't want to sound like I was upset with the pay out. I had so much fun and meet so great people. I don't race to make money but I guess that goes without saying..................... ;D

For those that are wondering..........
My finger is healing well. I do have feeling in it; But it feels like somebody wrapped a rubberband around it. I also still have a lot of numbness in my ring and pinky fingers.
I know that I have nerve damage, but can't afford to take care of that right now. I am doing better than I expected.
Still not back to work; But that has been my choice. I have been doing my home health care since the end of my first week after the accident. There just wasn't any way that I could leave my patient hanging.

THANK YOU to Everyone for all the thoughts, prayers, and emails!
I DO Appreciate You All!

Update,
I am about as healed up as I am going to get. Still have some numbness in my fingers, but at least I can use my hand again.
I will be going back to work for my former employer. They called me on Monday, asking if I would come back. Nice to feel needed!  ??? ::)
I'll start on Thursday. It will be good for me to get back to work. I know some of my residents are very happy!
Thanks to everyone for their PMs, emails, and prayers! :)

I raced up at the badger State Nationals this past weekend, got to meet Brian.  Friday night I finished second in my heat and after leading most of the race and an awesome 15 lap side by side race for the lead I finished second.  Saturday night I finished 3rd in my heat and started 12 in the feature.  On the second lap I made contact with a spining car in front of me and bent my LF steering arm  and it toed the car out about 3".  It handled rather poorly after that but still managed to pull out a 6th place.  If not for the damage I think another top 3 would have been doable as the car was fast in the first 2 laps.  Very tough racing with a lot of crashing, racing with a new group of drivers is always tough but just way to much carnage.  I am glad I escaped with relatively minor damage.  Now its time to gear up for the Nationals.

Congratulations Jeff !
Sorry to hear about the damage to the car. At least you are alright, and still a  respectable finish.
I haven't had the pleasure to meet Brian yet, But hope to get over to ND to watch him race sometime.
Best of Luck at the Nationals!

Hey Jeff,

Thanks for stopping over and introducing yourself.  I'm glad I got a chance to meet you face to face.  Congratulations on your good runs at Cedar Lake and best of luck to you at Nationals.

The first night on a restart several laps into the race several cars in front of me stacked up and I ran over the back wheel of one car and got a bit airborne, dropped back on all wheels and kept going down the straight, but when I got to turn 1, something broke and the car drove straight up the track.  I was hard on the brakes, but pulled right in the path of Robert Lever coming around on the high side and he hit my right front and it sent him into a nasty rollover.   I feel bad about what happened, but I had absolutely no control of the car when it took off up the track.   I definitely lucked out with just a broken right front spindle block and an oil cooler.  That was the first time I was on the hook in about 110 nights of racing and only my 2nd DNF of the year so I sure won't complain.

Night two I got a little piece of someone else's wreck and got spun around, but luckily no damage to the car so I continued on and finished in 11th place, so I was fairly happy with that.   I know I was very happy to finish after witnessing the rollover that Tony Brockhouse took.  I was right behind him when he got clipped by a car that lost control coming out of turn 2 and took a very nasty rollover down the backstretch.  When I went by, there was parts flying everywhere.  Tony cracked a couple of vertebrae in his back but it sounds like he won't need surgery and will heal up in 6 months.  His car wasn't as lucky.   It makes a guy wonder if this is what he wants to be doing for fun, but I tell myself that it doesn't happen often and hope it doesn't happen to me.

We stopped off in Glyndon on the way home.  We had 18 cars show up with several rookies in the race.  We had another rollover on the start of the feature with one of the rookies when his brakes failed but he walked away.  I had a poorly handling car but managed a 6th place finish to end the season.   I'm ready for a break from the racing, but will be wanting to go racing in a month or so, so it will be a long winter again.

Good luck again Jeff.  Race safe.

Brian,
Congratulations on a safe end to your season!
You've had your share of close calls. Always good to hear that all drivers are relatively ok. Those vertebrae can be sneaky............... Mine came back to haunt me in later years. Or maybe I'm just getting old!  ::) :D ;D
Anyway, Good to hear that you got home in one piece! I look forward to reading your thoughts on the weekend over on your site. Get some rest!

Congratulations on the 6th place finish!

I had a pretty good first season.  I finished up last week with a 3rd in the heat and a 7th in the feature.  While not spectacular, it was a very close race, and I was a contender all the way.  I now know that I need to play with gear ratios for next year so I can be more competitive, but at last it's the car holding me back and not the reverse.  Since that's what I was aiming for this season, that's a win.

I had a few problems over the summer, but nothing permanent.  One broken axle, 3 broken lollipops, 1 broken top link mount on the housing, a couple bent horns, a bent steering arm, a bent radius rod, a couple cracks in the front fenders, another clutch failure, a broken crank.  All in all, a good season even if a little more expensive than I was prepared for.

I've got a lot of work to do on my car over the winter to tweak it even more towards a winner.  A little welding, a little body work, a little painting, and voila!

To make the season seem so much better, the track promoter announced me as the most improved driver this year.

Congratulations Mike!

Sounds like you had a productive weekend, as well as a productive season. You also made (at least) most of your goals for the season. That IS a Win!
You will have a better idea of what to expect for next year. You will also need to figure out the causes of the broken parts (accidents aside).
I hope you enjoy the rebuilding time this winter. I look forward to your insights during the winter.

Wow Brian, sorry I missed out on the action.  Congrats on the good runs.

I decided to hang up the suit for the season after the double header on  Sept. 6th and 7th.  I had a blast this past yr and cannot wait till 2009!!  I gotta thank all the guys that I race with for helping me out with some tips and tricks.  I may not have won any races but when I can run wheel to wheel or bumper to bumper and pass people I'm having fun.  the only thing I broke all yr was a stearing arm and a few bumper tabs.

Good luck to all going to the Natls.

Still waiting on my engine so hopefully I will at least be able to make the indoor race in December.  You people are making me jealous (except for the crashing part).  ;)

John,
I can't believe they still have your engine!  >:(
Spend time this winter looking for someone else; Or, start learning how to do it yourself.
I guess you and I are going to spend a lot of time making Varoom Varoom noises out in the garage just so we get some seat time.  ;D
 ::)
Keep after them! I hope that you make the indoor race! If nothing else, It will give you a little time to get aquainted with your car.

 Best of Luck!

I had a great year this season, raced 37 times and several were at new tracks for me, I love the track in Austin Won 1 raced and finised 2nd and 3rd alot, eneded up finishing 12 in Masters in the National Points. Next year is a more relaxed schedule kind burned out as of now.

I will give everyone an update on how things are going by me.  Grant and I both have our cars torn apart down to the bare chassis to do some frame work and get them powder coated.  I finally sold my other race car project and now have bought myself a backup car for next year.  I am going to tear that car down as well so my plan is to have 2 identiaclly prepaired cars ready to go for next year.  My backup car wont have quite as much power but still will be a nice car, especially for the money I have in it.
