Title: Nationals Location?
Post by: IraceLegends77 on January 16, 2009, 04:07:03 pm
I heard on another site that the asphalt was going to be in Georgia any thoughts or guess on the dirt this year?
They said that they are going to tell us during the awards ceramony. That is the rumor anyway.

I figure it will be in or around Pennsylvania again this year.  I wish it would be somewhere around the midwest again - a little more centrally located.  I definitely enjoyed going to the Nationals the two years I went and hope to be able to go again someday.

Well, that would suck. I personally think it should be centrally located so more people could attend. If anything else, they should move it somewhere different every year. How many of the NV guys are going to tow to PA year after year, or the other way around? Sure, if the purse was kick-a$$, as a national championship event would normally indicate, I could see it, and maybe it is, never went, so I have no idea, just doesnt seem like the way to elevate car counts or call it a nationals event, by having it onone coast or the other...seems like if thats the ide, they should have regional championships. For once, maybe the SCCA is doing something right? ???

Yep! I heard that Lanier will be the place for the asphalt nationals for Legends.
Bandos at Atlanta.
Dirt Nats.... ???????????????????????
Sorry! Don't have anything on that.  :-[

This is just all hear say. Guess we'll just have to wait 'til they announce it.

Jim,

The problem was that the car count wasn't that good when they had in Missouri two years ago. They where looking to get the car count up and it worked. You are right though about the pay. If the put some cash up it wouldn't matter where they hold it.

Thats my point...didn't they have it in Missouri for a few years in a row? I think if you look at demographics, the 3 biggest dirt contingents are PA, the Dakotas, and Wisconsin, so move it from track to track in the western midwest, and I think there would be more interest.
I know I wouldnt trailer to PA for a race, maybe Im odd tho, as if we didnt already know that  ::)

How big are your tracks UP there?
Title: Re: Nationals Location?
Post by: VMS Motorsports on January 16, 2009, 10:34:48 pm
Charter raceway is 1/3 mile, Chilton is 1/4 mile...those are our 2 main tracks

I think they would want a bigger track for the Nationals. Not knocking the small tracks but to start 26 to 30 cars on a 1/4 track you better start up front. Big Diamond was a 3/8 and was a perfect size and really smooth. The Masters race was one of the best races I have ever seen in a long time.

We have a WoO show every year on the 1/4 mile at Charter...How 'bout Eldora? Tony's dad would love it. How about Kankakee?  I guess my point is there are alot of dirt tracks more centrally located to the core of dirt racers than having everyone drag 14 hours to Pennsylvania every year, or Missouri every year, or anywhere every year. Mixing it up would be good in my opinion

You have my vote for Eldora.......Now the would be one to tell the grandkids about one day.

Scott - I'm not sure I heard how many cars were at the nats this year, but I'm under the impression that car counts weren't much better this year.    The last 2 years in Missouri, I didn't think car counts were BAD, but I thought they would be much better than they were.  They definitely weren't as high as the asphalt nationals.

I think we had 70 something at the Dirt Nationals this year.  It was around 25 in each class.

Brian, all three class had a full field. I do think that they where hoping for a better car count but with gas at $4.00 a gallon probable didn't help things. I know if that where the case the year before I wouldn't have pulled 1100 miles one way to go. Don't get me wrong I had a great time in Missouri but if I have my choice I would vote for something close. My Mom and Dad came from Oklahoma to watch though. I think that the grand kids might have somethig to do with too. Hope to see you this year.

My brother just got home from the banquet, he said they are still trying to get the details finialized before they anounce where they will be.  But for some reason he seemed to think Lowes.  Although he didn't really say why he thought that.  I uess we just have to wait and see.
Scott, I read in the AARN paper this week Diamond is not having us back at all this year, they are not running any 4 division shows, so I guess that would not mean the nationals couldn't be there though.

That last Nationals race in Missouri at Midway Speedway had 56 cars if I remember correctly.  The thing that surprised me at Midway was that the stands were not very crowded for Saturday.  Not sure what it was like at Big Diamond.  Do not want to see stand alone races like this turn into something like road races without many fans in the stands.  Missouri is starting to get a better following for dirt legends cars and I think there are a good number of dirt legends racers out in Texas.  Moving it North and South in the Midwest from year to year would probably make the most sense.  Assuming the car is working all season I might be willing to tow up to 8 hours, but probably not beyond that.

I agree that a good purse is the key to drawing cars.  Something this big should be $1000 to win minimum.  With that and some good promotion, I would think 100 cars and a decent crowd would be well within reason.

The crowd at Big Diamond was horrible, maybe 100 people and they all came for the enduro after the Legends racing was done.

Just an idea, but should the Nationals races be mid-summer when it is easier to get people in the stands?  The Nationals does not decide a championship, so block of a week on INEX sanctioned races for of the dirt nationals in July and have a good purse.  Fans who show up for racing every week might come out to see the legends cars with a few good local support classes.  What kind of fan turnout do they get the asphalt nationals?   Without people in the seats the purse will not improve much.

As far as locations, Indiana has some good dirt tracks and would be close enough to many of the dirt racers to put into the mix for a nationals race.

I didn't think Midway had THAT bad of a crowd.  They had several other classes of cars and I'm sure most of the people came to see them.  Also, I believe they had another big event going the same weekend at another area race track.  The year before at Lucas Oil Speedway, the crowd was TERRIBLE.  It was sad to see this huge, beautiful facility pretty much empty.  I'm sure there weren't more than 100 people there.

I had never been to a nationals race, so I guess I was expecting a bigger crowd than what they had at Midway.  The track and Missouri Legends guys worked to promote the race along with having some local classes, but I think that by that time of year fans are a little burned out on racing.

when we where at Midway they had really Big football game on Friday and a monster truck show in town on Saturday. The crowd at both last year and this year where bad. I know that the racing is good but just hard to get a crowd out to support it. I have also heard that the track has to pay a good sum of money to get the race. The year that it was at Midway it wasgoing to be held at Lowes because no one had came up with the money to hold it. I think that Lowes is the "fall back track" because 600 racing can get the track for free. I think it would be a nice place to run but not a lot of dirt track racing in that area.

Thats to bad, I had such a good time last year but thats just way to far especially with the down economy.  Maybe if I can get some sponsors together again this year it might happen but that isnt looking to good.

I'm hoping to make the trip to Eldora this fall.  It is a long way to go for one night of racing but I think it would be nice to say you raced at Eldora.

INEX/600 Racing should consider holding the national events over a weekend when school is not in session.
Early October is just bad timing, school has just started in most areas of the country, leaving some parents and racers down on expendable entertainment dollars due to school clothes and extra-curricular activities at school (i.e. sports, band, PTA/PTO fundraisers etc.)  Also by early October, the grades are pretty much known for the fall semester and parents do use racing as a motivator. I know many families who stop racing to particpate in other school activities, or to start saving for the holiday season. We all know the Christmas Holiday Shopping season seems to start earlier each year!

My suggestion to 600 is to hold the Nationals over spring semester break (late March/early April). Most racers are ready to start the season with fresh cars, have an eagerness to get back behind the wheel and may be a bit more conservative so as not to destroy thier equipment or anyone else's through bonehead racing early on in the season.  Also the parents haven't used their vacation time yet (if they still have jobs in todays economic situation) and the Christmas bills are hopefully taken care of.

As for location, I have been fortunate in being able to travel the country and race many different tracks on dirt, asphalt and road courses. This includes both asphalt and dirt nationals last October. One thing I know for sure is there are some  super facilities throughout the midwest, places like Colorado National Speedway for asphalt. The RMLRA organization would be fantastic hosts!

As for dirt, Kansas City has gone back to dirt and too would be centrally located to everyone.  The road course World Championship should be held close to port so the foreign entrants wouldn't have too much of a hassle getting their stuff in and out of the country. Hallett may work, or the SCCA facility near Houston Texas. Not to mention Infineon in California.

With all that being said, we as racers need to keep in mind that 600 Racing is a business too, and it is dependent on a customer base with limited budgets and shrinking incomes. They do need our support  in order for them to remain in business. I don't think there is anyone pumping tens of thousands of dollars into 600 Racing  just so they can watch us race, they, like us want a return on our investment. 600 has the same overhead as any other business with the major concern of making the payroll and paying the bills!

All levels of racing (tracks and racers) are feeling the backlash from the current economic situation. Many tracks are closing, or running big name/draw special events only in an effort to bolster the dwindling fan attendence.  Late in the season events compete with all levels of high school and college football.  Many venues can't give tickets away in an attempt to fill the seats. A lot of our fans are also feeling the pinch and don't care to spend extra money on Friday or Saturday nights when they can sit home and watch the Camping World Trucks on Friday night, the Nationwide race on saturday night and the Sprint Cup cars on Sunday afternoon.

Enough said, I'll get off the soapbox!

Looks like it is official.  This is from legendsnation.com.  I will not be traveling that far for it, but having it near Charlotte the weekend of the cup race might get the race more attention.  It will be interesting to see how it works out.

2009 Dirt Nationals to be Held in October at East Lincoln Speedway in NC
02-25-2009 | Carolina News

Yesterday it was announced that the 2009 INEX Dirt Nationals will be closer to the home office of INEX and 600 Racing this season.  INEX Executive Director Darrel Krentz confirmed with LN that the Dirt Nationals will be held October 16th and 17th at East Lincoln Speedway (NC).  That is the same weekend as the NASCAR weekend at Lowe's Motor Speedway.  Krentz told LN that the races will be held during the day so all of the drivers, teams and families can go enjoy the NASCAR races at LMS after they complete the Dirt Nationals events.
