Title: How did you pick your car number?
Post by: Bigmil on July 28, 2010, 10:47:04 am
This goes for both Legends and Bando's

So I am wanting to re-paint my car but I was thinking about changing my car number (thus requiring me to re-paint it all at once as opposed to piece-meal).

I got to thinking what car number I should pick and I don't have a clue car number to pick.

So post here how you came up with the number you put on your racecar!

I will start.  I am number "49G" because when I bought my car it was already car number 49 and I didn't have the time or money to re-paint it before my first season (which is this season).  I added the "G" because I was told there was another 49 in my series (and I wamnted to differentiate myself).

Now tell me how you picked your number!

(not running Legends, yet)

The cars I have had, I've run w/ my lifetime number 17, or a variation of it in the event someone else was already running it.

I was born in the early 80's and grew up in a racing family, my younger brother is named after Bill Elliott.  My hockey numbers were always based off of different drivers, 27 for Rusty Wallace, 9 and 11 for Elliott, and 17 for the infamous Tide car w/ Darryl Waltrip driving it.  The first jersey my dad purchased for me was when his business sponsored our hockey team, w/ the 17 on the back, and it's been my number ever since.

BTW, we're having a Team Canada vs Team USA ball hockey game over here in Afghanistan where I hope to wear the 17 and score at least a hat trick against the goalie wearing the blue jersey.  ;)

Good luck w/ finding a number.

John

I've always been 17, in Soccer as a kid, Softball as i got older, and now racing.
My birthday is the 17th, so it just kind of became my #.

Dan is o1 because he is a "Dukes of Hazzard" freak

i wanted to be 38, it is my badge number.  The problem was that there was another 38, so when I got my car it looked nice and was 41..no one had 41....looks good

I wanted to be 21 because my birthday is march 21st but the number was taken and i didnt want to take his number so i decided to be 20. I got alot of crap from people cause they thought i was a tony stewart fan. I was also  18 for 5 years in gokart racing. Idk why i switched numbers. For football i'm 21 and for basketball im 22(20 was taken already)

Hockey in Afghanistan.  Would imagine that it is not exactly their national sport.  You will need to post a couple pics of that.

I had 90 before (high school football number) and when I got ready to race at a different track it was taken.  95 seemed like a good number, it was the year I got married, the year I graduated from college, so I stuck with it.

81 was my favorite dirt late model driver number in the mid 80's. Been my number for 12 years now.

Well 77, It was my Dads # when he was racing. I started racing with 27 but when I moved over to Legends it was taken (by Keven Yeatts) so I went back with the family number. I was 44 playing football and 11 basketball (many years ago) so 77 along with the family thing just made sence.

54 because my dad was born in 1954 and my favorite local driver is #54.

#59 because that's the year I was born...  Yeah, yeah, I'm getting long in the tooth to all those pro and semi-pro drives.  Qualify for golden masters series!

I used 41 most of my Karting years this was taken so I looked back three years of race results to see what way not used. So 38 not used and  I was 38 when I started getting interested in Legends

My stock car # was 8 then 8m later. When I bought the car it was 38 and 8 was taken so I left it. My dad's motorcycle number was 38 (mine was 48 which was also taken) so I just kept that #.  Thought about going back to 8 or 8m but 38 has really grown on me. Also, I was 38 years old when I retired from the Army and bought the car.

Mine is pretty much self explanitory.... 0¢
Racing leaves me broke and while I am racing a lot of non-sence happens !!
Of coarse my mother thinks I have no sence for racing...

LOL, seriously, I got a little creative with the number once after building a derby car back in the mid 80's

Wow, so it sounds like birthdays, birth years, old family racing numbers (of some combination), defenilty a lot of "other" sports numbers (football, basketball, hockey).
Very interesting.  I wish I was good at football or basketball when I was in highschool.  Maybe then it would have been worth remembering what my number even was (it only took one year....or less....of each for me to realize I was not the athletic type  ;D ).

It also sounds like my excusse for using the number because thats what came on the car is perfectly valid!!

I especially like the 0¢, I was trying to think of something similar that woul;d be kinda fun......but haven't figure it out yet.  I need to come up with something before I get to stepped in my own tradition!!

I know we haven't heard from everybody yet!

Oh, yeah I want to see pics of hockey in Afghanistan too!!

I was born in 87 and no one else was using that number. Now that I think about it, I might be the only 87 car at my local track on a given Saturday

Gerad,

I'm going to throw into the mix our favorite driver's number.
As I am a huge Mark Martin fan, my cars will be #6 (some of my best memories from his career) and #60 (remember the old Busch Series days? Or am I just old? lol!)

My original numbers came about as to what age I was when I started racing a particular series. Like Mike, I don't want to discuss it!!!  ;)  Lets just say that I helped God invent dirt. Hmmmmm!!!! Maybe I should try running dirt!  ;D

You are the only 87 that has graced the clay of Beaver Dam Raceway this year, there is a Street Stock that has occasionally been at OshKosh on Fridays that runs the 87  though...I can take care of him...just say the word and leave the black duffel bag of small, unmarked bills under the left side of Courtney Erfurth's trailer.
I am part Sicilian ya know  ;)

A guy I played football with in high school had a whole process because he thought numbers like 1 would make you look taller and numbers like 6, 8, etc.  made you look bigger and stronger.  Not sure if that applies to cars.  :)

If that's the case, I guess 4 is the most aerodynamic...at least on one side of the car!

There are so many creative numbers out there.
K after the number to signify thousand
6E for 'sexy'
I1 for 'I won'
Seen canadians put 'eh' after their numbers
2¢ is my back up car number
3d well, that's self explanitory
7's for 'lucky'
8 ball
9er or 69er
U2

If you do a search for phone text short cut words, you might find a witty number too

We used to have a "U2" that raced at Beaver Dam back before I started racing, I believe he passed away (non-racing related).
Jim Black runs the letter "Z"...not sure the story behind that.
Theres a Modified here with "4Q"

So this is what I am thinking......
I don’t want to have a letter behind my number unless it’s for funny purposes..

25 - The date I got married (my wife is lobbying for this)
79 - The year I was born
28 – My Birthday (number is already taken)
30 - Age we I first drove a race car
8 - Becuase it is a single number that I don't think any other driver in our series has and a single number decals cost less than two number decals.......

So, in my qwest to find a new number I have created my own spreadsheet to see what number are availiable and if/why I would want them.  I know I’m a dork……

Maybe I will look at fonts and see what numbers look cool in what fonts?

How did Ya’ll pick your fonts?

On my vinyl plotter software I typed in 17, then it will let you scroll through and show you each font in "17".
Then I picked my top 8, and had my wife and kids each pick their top 4, then their top 2, then kept narrowing it down that way. Had the same font for 3 years now

Gerad,

I'll email you a side view of your car so you can mess with different color schemes, fonts, etc...
Font is going to depend on body style and personal preference. You will want a contrasting color for your number(s). White is easy to see at night. The diamond numbers (like Jim has) look cool but cost a bit more. You might want to look through the "Show Us What You Got" thread and find color combinations and font styles to see what looks good to you. You will likely want something that is easy to see and read both day and night. I spent 30 years in the printing business, and it will likely come down to your personal preference. Get out your crayons, markers, whatever and play with the diagram. I've also seen some folks post a diagram of their car on their website and let fans color the car. Just throwing out some thoughts.

Before the days of decals I hand painted my own numbers on all my cars. I'm pretty handy with paint brushes. My chosen font is exactly the same as it was back in the late 70's

LOL! I numbered and lettered my first 3 cars by hand. You can get pretty creative doing it that way.
I hope that diagram I emailed you helps.

Steve,
I never recieved anything?

I think I am leaning towards A flat black paint job with Yellow outlined college jersey font type numbers (I'm a huge Iowa Hawkeyes fan).

Still working on the nuber though.......thinking maybe 24 (not neccesarily for Gordon although I am a fan) for the best football player in Iowa history, Nile Kinnick.

Maybe it's just getting to close to college football season?  ;D

Ok, so I finally did it....  I decided on a new number......8

Really I didn't have many reasons.  It was the only single digit car number that was symetrical (I like that) that wasen't already taken in our series.  Being a single digit it's cheaper to get decals, stencils, etc. for my car in the future (yes, I am that cheap sometimes).  No personal significance for me.  Couldn't find a good number that did have some sort of significance.

and

I recently watched one of my favorite movies "The Postman" with Kevin Costner.  In it the Holness is the army tring to take over the owrld and they live by "the rules of 8" and my wife hates that.  So I picked 8 to get under her skin!!

Anyway thanks for all your help!!

Gerad,

Don't know that that is the smartest reason to pick a number, LOL! I like the color combo in your new avatar. Flat black; Buy a rattle can and instant touch up. Cheap and easy! Also gives it that old time hot rod look.

Yeah, I tried going for the rat rod look but getting a fiberglass body to look rusty......Rattle can flat black was the next best thing.

My number has always been 12,i always wore that number while i played ball in highschool and college. that was my uncles and dads number when they started racing back in the late 70's early 80's and is still my dads number today.  i didnt want the same number as my dad since him and i race against eachother, so i went with 38.  That was my little brothers old football number and i liked it..
