Title: Fuel Pump Question
Post by: KevinShaw on October 11, 2014, 04:33:43 pm
When turning on the ignition switch, engine still not fired, the fuel pump will continually pulse. Shouldn't it stop pulsing when fuel load is full? If so, any suggestions on repair? New to Legends Cars and am planning to test next week, want to make sure I'm driving and not troubleshooting at the track. Thanks.

Kevin,

Fuel pump is activated by 12 vdc sent to pump by ignition switch.  As long as ignition switch is ON, fuel pump will pulse and pump fuel.  Fuel pump is not pressure sensitive and will not stop until ignition is switched OFF.  Always remember to switch OFF ignition after competition or you may end up flooding engine or running down battery.

Hope this helps! Mark :)

Thanks Mark.

I pulled off the fuel line btween the cell and the pump, no fuel in line. I'm assuming that the pump is bad. Pump seems to have very little suction when placing my finger over the inlet opening.

Is your filter before or after the pump? I'd remove the filter and check the pump again. These things are only around 4PSI, so they wont suck too hard

if you have any air leaks in the suction hose the pump will not pull the fuel..

Thanks everyone and especially Joe. Split in the rubber hose underneath the braided material was pulling enough air to severely limit fuel supply to engine. Much appreciated!

Same thing happened to me this year. I replaced carbs, filters, and pump before finding a hole in the hose inside the tank. Then once that was fixed we another the hose to the first filter. That was one frustrating day to say the least. Glad you figured it out.
