Title: Another shot
Post by: justfreaky on October 01, 2018, 12:12:00 am
So... Here is my last shot at getting another car together. This has been the longest thread in history. lol! My good friend Craig G. gave me his old 2 bar chassis and body. Pretty sure I have most everything else except lower A-arms. This will be my very last build. Going to be a very busy, and long, winter season. I hope I don't disappoint all of you that have helped me out over the years.

Let me know your address Steve, Ill send you a set of lower A Arms. Since USLC still doesn't deem VMS worthy of being a dealer, we have started fabricating our own

Thanks Jim! Are these still $45 each? These a-arms are all I need to complete the suspension. As always; You always come through!
Thank You my friend!!! I will message you my address.

It's a long story. lol! I started this project years ago with the intent to build a dwarf car. As I am not a welder, I had a friend do the welding for me. When I moved back to Montana, I had various people do the welding for me. Needless to say, I chose a wrong person and they ruined the chassis... Burned big holes in the tubing. I have since bought a legends car chassis and am building that with the parts I have collected over the years. My intent is to run the car in SCCA auto cross. I will post pics as the build comes along.

I have the lower A Arms in stock now Steve, I'll get yours coming to you

Thanks Jim!
The chassis appears to be relatively straight. A little bend in the rear frame horns that I can straighten out. Getting the front and rear suspension mounted are my first part of the project. I am pretty sure that I have ordered all the parts needed. [From VMS Motorsports, of course! ;)]

I was talking with Joe Gartner this week about the race car... I am going to number the car as #93 Team Levi in honor of his son's fight with childhood cancer. I am really excited to have Levi aboard and support his fight! For those that don't know the Gartner family; Levi is their young son and has been fighting cancer since just before his 2nd birthday. He just recently turned 5 years old. He is still not out of the woods; But is doing better. He is having scans to track his progress this week. Everyone please send prayers and positive thoughts for Levi and the Gartner family.

Steve,

Although I don't know Joe Gartner, it is great to see you supporting him in honor of his son. I just lost my father-in-law within the last week. It makes a person think just how precious life is and how good we really got it compared to some others.

Keep up the good work! May God bless Joe and Levi!

Thank You, Mark! Levi is in for scans right now. Praying for good results. I totally support any efforts to improve awareness for childhood cancer! Childhood cancers only receive about 8% of the budget for cancer research. I think this is so wrong!!!

Finally bought the bolts, nuts and washers today and got the front end mocked up. New bearings and seals to install yet on the hubs. All is looking good! Anyone have the brake mounts for stock Toyota?

I promise that I will get some pics posted soon!!!

New lower ball joints from VMS Motorsports! Another set of hubs, rotors and much needed baking plates from Craig Gillihan! Was like Christmas in May!!! Also picked up my rear end and some other associated parts that were stored elsewhere. I forgot how fast that Stelletto rack turns! Been working 6 days a week, so not much time to spend getting the car together. More nuts, bolts and washers to buy to get the rear end mounted. SCCA requires hardened washers on both sides of all heims. Just some small differences to meet their rules.

Steering rack installed, all bolts, nuts and washers in place. Working on the hubs and brakes tomorrow. May get to start on the rear end as well. Have to get the tires mounted on the wheels and balanced. Hopeful that I can get Big O Tire to sponsor that.

Great weather today! Didn't do anything with the race car; Chose to spend it with my lady and a wonderful Mother. Also spent a few moments to promote Childhood Cancer Awareness. Just maybe my post will help make a difference. I promoted my friend and sponsor, Jim and VMS Motorsports. I apologize to those I failed to mention that have helped along my journey to get this race car built. I can't Thank Everyone here on the site enough for all your help and support!

THANK YOU!!!

Steve,

Good choice spending the day yesterday with your lady. I spent mine too with my Mom(whom I am fortunate to be alive yet and in good health) and my wife as well. Without them, we don't do what we love to do. Keep us posted on status of your project.

Lower ball joints installed. Broke the backing shields loose from the brake caliper mounts and installed those. Hubs installed as well.
A bit of clean up and paint and all will be bolted on permanently.

So, my big project today was to install the gas pedal. Don't laugh at me! lol!!! I have been having a lot of problems with my blood pressure and a lot of stress created by this Covid virus. We are still on lockdown at work. Back to working long days and weeks. Hopeful that things will get better soon and I can spend more time on the car. Next project today is to change the oil in Kelly's van. I hope there will still be time to do a bit more on the race car today.

Got the oil change done yesterday in Kelly's van. I placed the rear end in the racecar today. Need to get some more spacers from Jim (VMS Motorsports) and get my tires mounted. At least I can roll it around after that. I have no energy. Between the blood pressure issues and trying to get back to work, I am exhausted. I'll take baby steps if that's what I have to do to get her done!

Rear end is mocked up. Ordering rear bars and heims from VMS Motorsports. Picking up my wheels and tires tomorrow. Will be nice to roll the car out in the sunlight! lol!!!

Parts ordered for the rear end and wheels/ tires on the front. Should be rolling very soon!
I think I will get the interior cleaned up and painted; Also get my seat mounted while I am waiting on parts.

Kind of a bitter sweet day... Stripped off the old sponsor decals from Jim's old hood and the decals from the interior and body of Craig's old car. Was like stripping away history.  :'( :'( :'( Hated to do it; But have to get started on the body so that I can start getting it ready for paint. I was able to salvage a couple of decals and stuck them on my toolbox for motivation. Rear end parts should be here on Monday.

Again, Thanks to Jim at VMS Motorsports; I finally have the car on the ground and rolling!!! Still lots to do. Working on going through the engine and getting that mounted is the next part of the project. Those of you that have been on the site for awhile know it has been a struggle for me to get this far. I am super excited!!!!

Steve,

Glad to see that you're making good progress on your Legend car. Looking forwarding to seeing it when it's finally all done.

Keep up the good work and make sure to have fun while you're at it. BTW - Like the VMS T-shirt!

Take care and stay safe! Mark

Thanks Mark! Working on getting the hood sanded down. This came from Jim's car (the old lime green and purple paint scheme). lol! He didn't have good luck with that car. All those new rod ends and heims came from VMS as well. ;)

Sanded a bunch today. It's interesting to remember some of the paint colors and get the history behind each and every part that is going on the car. Some of the folks I talked to never even remembered the body parts being that color. I am covered in layers of paint dust!!! Eyes, ears, nose, clothes, etc... What an awesome day!!!!

I got the air scoop, trunk lid and right side door done today. I know that Craig bought the car already painted Yellow. Gel coat was white (of course). next layer was a dark purple, an Army green color, Black, Neon orange, then the neon yellow. Stripped Jim's old hood down; White gel coat, red and lime green. Wish I knew all the history behind all the different colors. Have followed Jim for a number of years, so know his colors. Grill shell I got from Josh Thomas. Many different colors on that as well. I have paint dust in my eyes, ears, nose and some places you all don't want to know about. What a great day!!!

Both doors are sanded now and started on the main part of the body. Cowling is almost done. Sanding at least 5 layers of paint. I think some of these folks got a bit carried away with the thickness. I think they thought the paint was going to fly off the car. LOL!!!! All is going well though. Been busy with the Childhood Cancer Awareness fundraiser this weekend. I think we about ready with that. Still lots to do, and will still have to do a lot of hand sanding yet to come.

Took a few days off for the Childhood Cancer Awareness fundraiser; Which went fairly well. Raised some money for the Ronald McDonald House here in Montana.
Now, back to sanding the rest of the body! I have a few repairs that are going to need done. Anyone have tips or tricks for repairing holes and cracks in the body?

Always nice when you can find the right socket or tool to fix something. LOL! Generator is repaired and spent a couple hours sanding the main body today. About 1/3 done. Takes a while to strip off 5 layers of paint and get right down to the fiberglass. Still looking for tips and tricks to do a few repairs. Been about 40 some years since I've messed with fiberglass. Things are coming along though.

Bought myself an air powered sander with my birthday gift card. Thing works tons better than the power tool sanders!!! Half the car sanded now! These things are pretty damn ugly in bare fiberglass. LOL!

18" of snow and cold. Not getting anything accomplished. New parts from VMS Motorsports today, so feels like Christmas! LOL!!!
Thank You to those that sent me messages on fiberglass repairs! Think I have made a plan to do the necessary repairs. Still a lot of work to do if the weather warms up. Thank You for all the support and encouragement from my racing family! You all keep me pushing forward!!! I know that I will not make any money; But my efforts to promote Childhood Cancer Awareness continues. I finally retired this month. I am looking forward to my volunteer work for Kelly's Closet, providing clothing, diapers, etc... to families in need. I also look forward to continue to promote Childhood Cancer Awareness. We raised a few dollars for Ronald McDonald House last month to help families while their children struggle to fight cancer. They were awesome to work with!!!!

Hope you all have a great off season! Hopeful that next year will bring togetherness and a much happier year to all my racing friends.

So, I am in to the winter months. Not likely to get much done for a bit. :'(  Awhile back I asked for tips and tricks to doing fiberglass repair; It's been a lot of years since I have done any fiberglass work. I've been watching a lot of videos on YouTube and think I have my plan of attack on the bodywork. Can't wait until Spring to get started!!!

In the mean time, I have been keeping myself busy with volunteer work for Kelly's Closet. We supply clothing, diapers, wipes, etc... for those in need. Our main focus is on children in the Great Falls, MT area; But we help the adults as well. We did our annual Christmas stockings and managed to hand out 300 Christmas stockings and help about 40 families with gifts. I can not thank our friends and sponsors enough!!!! This has been a rough year on everyone! Plans are already in the works for next years projects. Looking forward to continued work with the project.

I look forward to getting the race car finished as well. My car will be themed to promote Childhood Cancer Awareness. I know of one member who's son was diagnosed about 4 years ago. I am fortunate to have met him when he was just an infant. He is now 5 years old. Not out of the woods yet; But doing better. I am doing an annual fundraiser through Kelly's Closet for Childhood Cancer Awareness. We were able to donate money this year to the Ronald McDonald House to help out families here in Montana (USA). I am already working on the 2021 fundraiser. If you would like more info on Kelly's Closet, please feel free to look up our Facebook page. We hope to have a website this next year.

Happy New Year to all our friends here at LegendsRacer! A Safe and Good Year to everyone.
