Title: How much does your legend weigh?
Post by: MegaMang on December 31, 2007, 11:41:07 pm
My legend is a 34 ford sedan, and weighs 1167 lbs.  No lead, that's just the car.  I think the last two drivers had so much success with this car because they weighed nothing.   ;D

I'm guessing I will weigh in at about 1180- 1200# minus my 146#.
Told ya I was skinny!

gramps05, are you by any chance as skinny as Steve?  I do envy those of you slim enough to add lead to come up to the 1300 mark.  Going to have to work on that next.  Might have to sew my mouth shut for this one!

Thanks,
Mike

My 34 coupe weighs in at 1157 with the old body and no lead. My dad's car (34 coupe) weighs in at 1145 with no lead and newer body and lots of body repairs. He still has the weight advantage at 165 pounds versus my 225.

Thanks for clearing that up Gramps.  I was starting to picture a wizened little old man dropping his walker to climb into the car.

elimn8u, at least you still have a weight advantage over me.  Smile!

What we're looking at so far is

34 Ford sedan:      1147   (My lead sled with fuel it's 1167)
34 Ford sedan:      1107   (RB - that just isn't fair)
34 Ford Sedan:     1151

34 Ford coupe:     1157
34 Ford coupe:     1145
34 Ford coupe:     1135
34 Ford coupe:     1101   (Go Frank, go!)

37 Dodge coupe:   1152

37 Chevy sedan:    1111
37 Chevy sedan:    1130
37 Chevy sedan:    1130
37 Chevy sedan:    1141

Surely there must be some others out there willing to list their weight.

Thanks for the info guys.

34 Ford Sedan and it came in at 1140 with 15lbs of lead.  They were not my scales so I am not sure how accurate it is.

Somebody has been taking extra funny pills today. ;D

From the sounds of it you could strap an extra car to the fender and still come in under weight.  Y'all might want to starting eating a bit more!

I agree with Mike. Being the fattest guy at the track, I would like to impose a moratorium on skinny guys...Ive never seen so many 150 pound adult males in my life!

I'm going to go eat a piece of cheesecake now.

Hey VMS,
What you doing to your car that you have it all apart?

Mike
Title: Re: How much does your legend weigh?
Post by: VMS Motorsports on January 04, 2008, 09:52:38 am
I bought it mid-season last year and just figured since we have a seven #@%&^$% month long off season I might as well take it apart! I had been having some electrical problems (only in the garage, never at the track, luckily), so I figured since the body was off, I'd just go through everything, happily, nothing too ugly to report yet! I'll probably lose a pound of cobbled together wiring repairs and electrical tape, so save some cheesecake for me!

Mine is 1130 minus me, I am 6'4" and weigh 230 pounds, I remember at the 2004 nationals, the tech guy told me I was under the weight limit...after I stopped laughing, I told him the car needed to be centered on the pads, Oh your ok now he says, I still laugh about that.

Here is a neat trick for you bigger guys.  You will need a wooden dowel about 3' long, a sharpie marker and an accurate way to measure fuel.   the car needs to be fairly level.

Disconnect your fuel line at the carb and pump out all the fuel into a container with the fuel pump.
Put the dowell in to the fuel tank and push it all the way to the bottom.  Pull it out and mark it.  This is your "empty" mark.
Now put in exactly 1 gallon of fuel and measure that amount with the stick and mark it "1 gal."
Put in a second gallon and measure it again and mark the stick "2 gal."
Now make 10 or 20 laps and measure again with the stick and then  pump out the fuel again into something that will allow you to measure how much is left in the tank above empty.
This will tell you how many laps you get per measured amount of fuel.  The stick can be used to gauge how much you need to add when in the pits given the number of laps you expect to make.

Each gallon of fuel weighs about 8 lbs.  You don't want to put in any more than you have to in order to make weight AFTER the race.

Don't forget that this will have a major effect on the nose/rear weight distribution, so you may need to find ways to put your front end on a diet in order to get that rear weight percentage up.

So I had Mega Man over last night and made sure to feed him lots and get the weight up in the car :-)  So I put my car on the scales this morning (making sure to put all the parts back on) and it wa 1122 with a 15 pound weight in the back left.  I think I got lucky and bought a super light car.
Title: Re: How much does your legend weigh?
Post by: MegaMang on February 10, 2008, 05:29:25 pm
OK Ricky Bobby... Didn't you read that I have a weight problem?  What's with feeding me?  Are you that afraid I'll pass you?  Now I'm hoping I do, knowing what kind of a weight advantage you have.  Then I'd be able to prove that my sealed engine is better than your open engine, and that I'm obviously more skilled a driver...  Well maybe...

Thanks for the vittles,
Mike

Thanks Tom.  I haven't yet looked to see how much I need in the tank for the 20 laps, and I'm thinking I'll have to try this trick out.  Especially after having all that food at Ricky Booby's.

What are all you light weights running for seats, are you running a fire control system?

There is a lightweight seat available from Kirkey that is a real popular choice for cutting down weight.  I know Casey Roderick runs this seat.  I want to say it ways a total of 19 pounds?

I think the norm is for people to run about 30 lbs over the 1300 pound minimum.  I know Billy Fulson does, and Zac Kittle as well.
Title: Re: How much does your legend weigh?

OK.  I'm going to have to pay attention and look at the bloody seat for real now.  I haven't a clue which seat I actually have.  I'm lousy on brand names and models, so I'll have to make a real effort and answer properly!

2.75  kilograms = 6.0627 pounds.

That's a pretty light weight seat!
But; it doesn't include head restraint, shoulder supports, or leg protection.
When I get mine all bolted together, I'll weigh it and let you know where I am at.
That seat is also carbon fiber, and (if you convert the current exchange rate) VERY EXPENSIVE!!!
I think it was 620.00 British Pounds. Don't have a conversion chart for that.
I'm using Butler Built and Kirkey stuff; and have what amounts to a full containment seat.

I would re-think your dollars VS weight savings. Besides; We are going SCCA, and INEX rules don't necessarily apply.

Just my thoughts,

Steve

You know what, we don't know what Tweety weighs exactly because the one night that the Capt. won the race, he was so excited he forgot to go to the tech shed to be weighed and teched!!  True story!!  And the tech man came into the pits and told him but he didn't disqualify him for it and no one protested about it because everyone was so excited for us. *L*

So I guess if they were to weigh the car after a dirt race, it'd be much heavier...  That mud can really pack in there.

It'd be interesting to see what it does weigh in the end.

ya but nobody has challanged the 1105 yet.  I was speaking with a dealer the other day who gave me the low down on some of these cars.  The new ones he said are light, very light.  Also, Mike we were lucky and got some made in 98 which were also very light.  The car tim runs is an original car which was not made by 600 but some guy who made the chassis for them.  I wonder if it meets the upgrade chassis rule?

Hi Mike,

I smile every time i'm in, around, talking or anything that has to do with my car. And thanks, it is good to know my car is not a tank compared to you guys across the country and you guys north of the border.

I am installing a fire bottle this weekend. so I will have another 8-10 lbs. added this year. It's a must for me now after the scare we had last month here in Cali with one of our drivers getting burned pretty bad.

Keep these types of threads going! this forum is GREAT! Nothing else like it for Legend Drivers.

Thanks,

So any time you want to win, come racing up here.  Just make sure Ricky Bobby has been sabotaged first since his car is light enough that he can be a nice round 200 lbs, and still get his car weighing 1300...  Otherwise,  yours will fly!

I have a '37 Chevey Sedan and it weighs 1150 with no lead full fuel and oil.  I really dont know what to do to get the weight down, I put in an aluminum steering wheel.  Do they make light weight wheels, mine are bassets and feel heavy?
Title: Re: How much does your legend weigh?
Post by: MegaMang on May 17, 2008, 12:06:22 pm
I remember that there is a minimum weight for wheels, so you don't want to muck around too much with that.

1150 minus the fuel should be around 1130, so that puts you inline with the other 37 chevy's.

A legends tire & wheel must weigh a minimum of  "36.0 lbs without additional steel, lead, or wheel weights."

I once saw a tech inspector make a competitor remove his wheel weights to weigh the tire/wheel combo. After the removal of those weights the tire did not pass tech...

The dealer then realized that tech inspector was hurting his car count as he was holding specific people to the written word of the book, but letting other slide. It might have been different if the guy he DQ'ed for the tire had dominated the race/season, but it was his first top 5 finish. The tires were a couple of years old and worn out, thus making them too light...

I decided to bring this a little further up the thread since it's probably of most value to any checking this thread out.

I've subtracted on average 25 lbs for full tank of fuel.  (thunder938 got a subtraction of 26 since he said overflowing...)

What we're looking at so far is

34 Ford Sedan:    1151   (Iracelegends77)  (and I thought mine was the lead slead!)
34 Ford sedan:     1147   (My lead sled with fuel it's 1167)
34 Ford sedan:     1139   (BBack58 needs to put his on a diet too)
34 Ford sedan:     1136   (My lead sled after a bit of a diet)
34 Ford sedan:     1107   (RB - that just isn't fair)

34 Ford coupe:     1157   (I don't remember if this with or without fuel or lead...  Sure hope it's without!)
34 Ford coupe:     1150   (elimn8u_43)
34 Ford coupe:     1145   (elimn8u's Dad)
34 Ford coupe:     1135   (6th Gear)
34 Ford coupe:     1101   (Go Frank, go!)
34 Ford Coupe:    1097   (It doesn't matter how big your butt is with that car VMS)

37 Ford Sedan:     1127   (djracing)
37 Ford Sedan:     1122  (thunder938)

40 Ford Coupe:     1086   (RB  so...  When you said full of fuel, did you really mean just covering the foam?)

37 Dodge coupe:  1127   (gramps05)

37 Chevy sedan:   1111   (tch38)
37 Chevy sedan:   1130   (qweedqwag)
37 Chevy sedan:   1130
37 Chevy sedan:   1141
37 Chevy sedan:   1150   (Racingjj)
37 Chevy sedan:   1170  (JGRacing)

Thanks for the info guys.  My car went on a diet last winter.  Took out some gauges I wasn't looking at anyway, and swapped out the rims for nice light Arrows.

After removing lead, gauges, and adding new clip and some frame mods ( gussets, lower cowl plates, etc.) over flowing with fuel......

37 Ford Sedan   1148lbs

Now you put me in at 6'3 somewhere around 240 lbs and running with guys and kids that are 100> wet. THATS JUST WRONG....:)

I weighed my old body at 34 lbs.  Don't know what a new one weighs.  Looking forward to finding out one day though...

Has anyone weighted a new body and an older body (the thicker one)I heard you can lose some weight that way.

My 1937 chevy sedan is 1195 with full fuel and no lead.  Not sure where all of the weight is hiding.

I have a fire bottle, gauges, helmet blower, and trap wheels which adds some weight, but not sure how my car is so much heavier.  Maybe I will go to the Texas style oil filter during the off season and get rid of probably 7 or 8 feet of braided line and fittings.

Post by: MegaMang on June 19, 2009, 01:04:11 pm
Not sure what a helmet blower weighs, but the fire bottle can be a bit of a hit.  I wouldn't change it though.  The trap wheels are costing you 2 lbs a piece of rotating weight.  Those are worth changing.  If it's  an old body, you could have 10 or 15 lbs hiding in there.  How much is the battery?  If you've got a big battery you could be looking at a fair bit of excess weight.  Gauges...  Took 5.5 lbs out by removing all my gauges.  I wasn't looking at them while racing anyway so why take them along for the ride.

Your car is the ultimate lead sled though.  I thought mine was bad, but yours beats it by a large margin!

The blower a pound or less and the battery is a smaller gell battery so those are not an issue.  The body may be an old one and I had to do a decent amount of repair work to it that probably did not help.  I do have braided 10 AN oil lines and an inline filter that probably adds some weight.  I might change to that Texas style filter mount for next season so that I can get rid of some of those lines.  As I need new wheels, I think I will start going to something lighter.  Until I re-read the posts about weights, I did not realize how bad my car was.

Looks like 600 racing and Inex will try to throw a stick in the wheels as it were.  I understand they have turned my nice brand new Arrow wheels into worthless junk for 2010.

In 2010 we'll only be allowed their heavy trap wheels or Basset rims...  Why are Bassets going to be allowed?  Seems that Basset rents lots of very expensive track time with them, so they've a vested interest in keeping the Basset rims legal.  If only Arrow rented the track as much...

Look the new rule book over carefully regarding wheels next year.

As for my nice new Arrow rims...  I guess they'll make neat looking wall clocks for my garage.

If you have mini-stocks racing up in your area, you might be able to sell the wheels at the end of the season and get some of the money back out of them.  Those racers are usually looking for deals on used parts.

About the weight issue, I was talking to one of our more successful drivers...no, not Jeff or Joey, one of the other ones...anyway, I commented Saturday after the heat races after getting scaled about how much the mud weighed on my car, Im 1307 right now, and after the heat was 1368. He almost soiled himself. His car weighs over 14oo with him in it...guess it takes more than a light car to win multiple National Masters championships.

Dont worry too much about hitting minimum weight. 4 time National Dirt Champ Eric Barth's car was well over 1400 with driver

He's right there bigmil.  You don't need to be at the minimum weight to beat someone else at that weight.  You can have a winning car with a heavier than minimum weight car.  Some say that the minimum weight is not the optimal weight for a top performing car, so they add lead to get up to optimal weight.  All kinds of schools of thought there.

For my money, I would try to reduce a little weight from the car so you can put it where you want it.

Here are some ideas to ponder.

-Unless you need the fuel for a long race, reduce the fuel load to just enough to run a race with about 10 laps extra.  Use a dip stick to check your fuel level before and after a race to see how much you use.

-Check the weight of your battery.  Change to a lighter battery if well above the minimum allowed.

-Check the weight of your rims with tires.  Change rims if heavier than minimum.

-Check the weight of your brake drums, replace with better drums if heavier than minimum weight.

-Got gauges?  You using them?  You got time to look at 'em?  You shouldn't!  Take 'em out.  If you're racing, you don't care if it's running too hot, you're going to go 'till it blows!  The old gauges are heavy.  Took all mine out and saved 5.5 lbs.  Do I sometimes wish I knew how much oil pressure I was running?  Not me, it gave me too much to think about that wasn't about being faster.

-Got the old fenders?  They weigh as much as 3.5 lbs heavier than newer ones sometimes.

-The body is another thing that could be way heavier than current.  Then again the newest bodies are made in China, and aren't all that light...

-Got lots of patches in your fibreglass work that is a bit heavy?  Grind 'em down and do it right.  If you patch it right, your finished patch will be no thicker than the original fibreglass work.

-What kind of fire extinguisher you running?  Might be able to shave off 2 - 5 lbs there.

-Got the remote oil system?  Might consider going with the texas style oil filter adapter and get rid of the remote oil filter.  Shave a few more lbs there in hoses and adapter.

-What size oil cooler you running?  Maybe you could get away with a smaller one and stay cool enough?

-All kinds of ways to lighten a car legally.  If you think you've got the original lead sled like mine was when I first purchased it, there are lots of things you can look at.  This is just a short quick list!

Hope it helps,

Mike the crazy Cannuck!
