Title: Compression Check
Post by: Lenny on October 04, 2007, 04:40:14 pm
I want to be able to check my own compression.  What do I need to check compression and what readings would be considered good?

A compression tester is what you need.  I bought mine at advance auto parts.  It came with several plug size adaptors and cost about $35.

A sealed engine will be 155 to 165 if it is in good shape.  You will notice a drop in power once below 140 and you better get the engine rebuilt once below 130.  Engine should be warm when you check it.  Take out all plugs and be sure to open the throttle when turning over the engine.

600 recommends MAC tools CT-100-03 gauge, CT-100-02 coupler & release valve, CT-140 14mm hose assy (long reach) with a CT112 adapter (12mm). Be  advised there are a number of things that will effect your readings such as engine temp, hose length, valve timing and altitude. No matter what it reads when you test it, the test the tech person does is what you have to go by, their gauge is God be it right or wrong, they are not required to have it calibrated. Been there done that! MAC tools also has a test set I belive the number is CT-125, Sears also has a nice set for around $50.00.
