Title: New Engine Break-in Period
Post by: Magic Man on August 02, 2010, 05:19:10 pm
I just recently bought a new re-built engine from USLegendcars and was wondering if there was a break-in period before we can expect optimal performance from the engine?

We were told to run 10w-30 for a few laps then switch to our regular oil and recheck the valve lash

Here is my procedure for a Bando Engine.  We have used this procedure for 9 engines and have not had one with oil consumption or problems of any kind, I know some of this is luck, but this is my story....and I ain't changin it!

Fill the engine and filter with 30 oz (total) 30w Valvoline non-detergent oil.
Run the engine at fast idle for 10 minutes and let it completly cool.
Run the engine at fast idle for 10 minutes and let it completly cool.
Run the engine at fast idle for 10 minutes and let it completly cool.
Run 20 laps at 50% max throttle and let it completly cool.
Change oil and filter using 30 oz  Valvoline non-detergent oil.
Run 20 laps at 80% max throttle and let it completly cool.
Run 20 laps using 100% throttle and let it completly cool.
Race the car for an event.
Change oil and filter using 30 oz  Valvoline non-detergent oil.
Race the car for an event
Change the oil and filter using 28 oz Mobil 1   5w20 (assuming no oil has been found in the catch can).
Change the oil & filter every other event.

Completly cooling the engine takes aboout 2 hours, a fan will shorten this time some.
Don't panic if the engine dies at fast idle, some do and some don't.
