Hi, I purchased a car with a oil temp and oil pressure gauge. However both of them are not working and i want to get them working again. I know that the oil pressure gauge was once used as i found oil in the line going to it. However I can't find where the sender unit is located or where it once was located. Does anyone have any ideas where it might be located. Next is the oil temp gauge. I am almost certain that it has also been used. I can't find where the probe would have gone. Does anyone know where these normally go. However i did find on the right side of the motor about halfway down a long silver metal shaft about 2 inches long with a cap screw at the end. Could this have been where the probe went into?
Thanks,
Dan

I've read through all the past threads and still am confused on it a bit, if someone could upload pictures of their setup that would be great.

Pressure gauge port on the exhaust side of the motor.
Temp gauge port wherever you want it. I run Dans car with the temp gauge probe at the remote oil filter adapter

Is there an actual port? or do i need to do any machine work?. On the remote oil filter how do you have it hooked up, i know all 3 have hoses on them.

Which oil filter system are you using?
I only have 2 hoses, and use the 3rd for the oil temp probe

I've got two hoses coming from where the regular oil filter would go, one runs into the remote oil filter and the other into the oil cooler. Then one hose goes from the remote oil filter to the side of the oil pan and finally one hose goes from the oil cooler to the remote oil filter.

Save yourself the hastle and throw the gauges away or put them on E-bay. I understand there are those that like gauges, most new guy want them. I have seen cars pull off many time because a gauge said they were running hot or oil temp or pressure went up or down only later to figure out it was the gauge, the car was fine. By the time the gauge reads a problem the damage to these air cooled motors is done. Maybe more input from more racers will help you, this is just my opinion as a racer , builder and dealer.

Thats a lot of excess plumbing.
I agree with Dennis on gauges, I only have a pressure gauge, no tach, nothing else. Dans car has oil pressure and temp only, and thats because they came with the car.
I'll post the oil plumbing diagram I use this weekend when I get to the right computer
-
Alright, we'll i have a dumb newbie question then, what is the right light on the dash for? is it an oil pressure light? The diagram will be helpful thanks,

Red light is oil level only. I bet it probably comes on every time you turn.
I unplugged mine, it was getting annoying.
-
I like the red light, it makes me feel special.......... ::)
-
This light should never come on. If it does you need more oil. Trust me I made that mistake and it was not pretty.
-
haha thanks for the help, i think i'm only going to worry about the temp gauge since i'd like to know when i'll need to run the fan. Just wondering do you run the fans all the time or just under yellows?
Dan

-
Just take the fan off.
-
We dont run the fans.
I've had the red light on every night for 3+ years. You have to be overfilling it not to have it come on. The sensor is on the left side of the pan, the oil goes to the right when turning, thus triggering the low oil level light.
-
Ask such engine builders as Hank Scott about the light and if it is working properly then you should NOT see it. With that said you should use motorcycle oil or you will get foaming which will also cause the light to come on because of starvation in the pan on the left side which is also one of the pick up point for the return line on my car. I'm not an engine builder but I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night. Really

You wont have time to look at gauges and turn fans on and off, fans as discussed are a preference and an opinion. We had a great discussion on this board in regards to fans. Kinda got a little technical and then some, lol. I am keeping mine. The last 8 cars i have built have one gauge, and thats a shift indicator, the guy that made that gauge is a little chinese genious.

What oil do you run?

i plan on running a 3 inch fan by the left front cooling kit to get more air to the side of the motor. Does anyone else run one like this?

I run Amzoil or Red Line and it just depends on which one I can get my hands on. I do run a fan on the back side of my cooler and turn it on at the first yellow or a few laps in to the race (on the straight) because I'm just a Semi-Pro......LOL

Dan,
Are you talking about a fan to cool the engine on the firewall side of the engine?
Dave ran one on his car. I guess it worked good for him.
Steve
-
There are people who run 3" brake cooling fans mounted to the firewall blowing sideways to cool the back of the head, always thought that would be an interesting idea, but the less power we take away from these electrical systems, the better

I was thinking either that or on the left side engine air duct that i have i'd put a fan or on the firewall.

I had a fan (3 inch-ish) that ran in the ductwork that went from the front bumper to the Air Duct under the headers. I liked it and used it frequently after the races to help cool the engine down. I thought it worked great until I hit the wall and broke it.... :'(

How many people run the air scoop under the front nose of the car? I have seen a bunch with and without this. Does it help. This'll be my first year in a legends and I am somewhat paranoid with the air cooled engine, and getting all the air to it I can, and keeping everything as cool as possible.
-
I was wondering the same thing about the air scoop. Who sells it or is it something that you just fab up your self?
Dan
www.winterracing.net

You can by them, http://www.rpmproformance.com/legends.html. some run them all help to get more are to the cooler. The biggest thing is to cool the back part of the motor/head. Behind the cam cover area that covers the timming chain. The back bart of th ehead and the jugs get NO air. Thats is one reason that when they blow it is more times than not the #3 rod. So that is why you see fans and ducts to the back of the head. On my car I did not have a fan blowing down on the back 1/2 of the head, like alot of others. But, I made and ran air duct that put air between the 2 rear plugs. That made a BIG diff. in temp. The head was the same temp across.
-
I run no guages...only the neutral light. No fans on the cooler or anywhere else to keep from drawing hp by means of the stator. No duct between the header and cylinder or the heat deflector behind and under the carbs. The duct and deflector trap heat.
I do have some external duct work to direct cool air towards rear sections of the cylinder head while on the track

I don't know if you can beat the price. This is one our local racers, his son has since stopped racing to go to school but he is still making legends parts.

Well i plan on running one fan on the back fire wall, I just had a question about it. Do you have the blower push the air towards the cylinders or do you have it pull away.
Dan

I also had a tube type fan on the fire wall that pushed air around the back of the jugs..I also had a fan on the 2 coolers...I never had a heat problem, but these things can never get too much air

Thanks for the picture thats how i want my fan to be set up. If anyone else has anyother ideas please share the info is great

I've been thinking about the scoop for awhile now. I've seen the link that Randy posted and have it saved on my eBay account. ANYTHING that helps air flow with these air cooled engines couldn't hurt! I think that PUSHING the air is better than trying to pull it away. Don't think a 3" fan will pull it away fast enough.
Steve
-
Thank you i figured to have it push, I'm still not sure if i'll purchase the air scoop for the front.

I agree Steve
After next season I may have a new cooling system available. Have a few minor tests to do on the track

My car came with a NACA duct in the hood to direct air onto the top of the 3rd and 4th cylinders. All of this has me thinking about ditching the fan on my cooler and using that juice to power a blower fan on the firewall.
Here is a link to a new setup that Hank Scott sells. http://www.realracecars.com/RRCFanKit/

That's a pretty slick set up.
Thanks for the link John!

Thanks for all the info on fans i got my fan today that i am going to use. I also got my temp gauge. I was wondering where everyone mounts the sender since it is a mechanical gauge. If you mount it in the remote oil filter can you explain how? I also saw in another thread about mounting it in one of the oil pan ports. The only problem i see with this is that it will take machine work which is against the legends rules. Can anyone clear this up for me?
Thanks,
Dan

i've got where i want to put the temp sensor, i am going to put it above the oil pan ports where that hex nut cover is. I tried putting it in and ran into the problem that my fitting is to big. Does anyone know of the size of the fitting that i should use?
