Title: Installing new pads
Post by: Voodoo on February 29, 2008, 06:16:09 pm
I know this may be a rediculous question, but I'll ask anyway. When changing front brake pads is there any little things I should be aware of? Besides replacing the pads and bedding them -- is there anything else? I read in my Carbotech box that if I am using the same rotors that were used previously and the previous pads weren't Carbotech pads then I would need to recondition the rotors. Is this necessary and by what exactly is this referring to?

Make sure you index the brake pads properly into the calipers bracket. There is a slot for each end of the pad to fit in, and if you don't get it index right, you will have no prake pedal response.

I also surface the rotors everytime I put on new brake pads. It is also a good time to check and pack/replace the wheel bearings before you have the rotors machined.

And by surfacing, this wouldn't be referring to "sanding" would it?
Thanks for your response.

No, I have the rotors turned on a brake lathe to provide a new surface for the brake pad to "bed" into.

Hi Zack,

 Exactly as Randy explained it.
Have the rotors turned on a brake lathe. Just enough to true them up. Most machine shops, brake shops, some parts stores (Napa Stores in my area) should be able to do this for you fairly cheap. (Possible foot in the door for some sponsorship)

It IS also the perfect time to check, clean (or replace), and pack your wheelbearings.

Good Advice Randy!
