Title: 4.30 in 4th or 3.58 in 3rd
Post by: racerkilla on March 14, 2012, 11:17:47 pm
I run bethel In new york and everyone runs 3.58 in third. Do you think there would be an advantage of 4.30 in 4th. With 3.58  I hit the rev limiter just about every lap. On the gearing chart shows 3.58 as a 5.62 overall and 4.30 as a 5.55. The most power is made at like what 9500-10000 so why let the motor rev all the way to the limiter. Also on the restart would be going from 3rd to 4th which has less of an rpm drop.... Does this make sense to anyone or sound good.

I talked with Larry McBride and his statement about hitting the rev limiter. "when you hit the rev limiter on these things they lose complete control over the valve train" It is VERY bad to do this. He did say it is a good thing for him because he likes the business though but of course he was kidding. Just a statement from one of the best motor builders in the country. Take it for what its worth. You are right about where these make power and if you go to Hank Scott web site he has a dyno sheet on his web site.

Definitely something I would do if I were in your shoes.

Got a set of 4.30 gears on the way to put in my extra 3rd member... its worth a try, easy enough to change back.
