Title: Axle Seals
Post by: Sagermotorsports on August 06, 2009, 05:53:30 pm
Hey Everybody,
I have to put new seals on my rear end ( end near backing plate ) I don't have any tool or pipe big enough so I can tap the seal into the axle tube evenly. Can I put the seal on the axle first and then slide the whole axle in? and also how far does the seal set in ? right to the edge of the housing or in as far as it will go? Any help would be appreciated
Thanks
Brett

Wow...did it 2 times this year and I don't have the faintest clue...
PM Jeff (racinjj), he'll be able to tell you...ask him if my rear end housing he built for me is done while you're at it!

You will need to make/buy a seal driver to fit the seal. It goes in until it stops with the lip towards the fluid.  I hope this helps.

You should try to get something to put it in with, I dont think putting it on the axle first will work.

You will get it this weekend Jim.

I made one out of a few large thick washers from a hardware store that just fit inside the housing and then welded some 1 inch square stock to it.  Just tap the square stock and goes right in.  I think it cost me about 2 bucks and a few minutes ot time..

Might sound like a stupid question, but what seal?  I just have the bare axle tube with the bearing that is pressed on the axle that goes into the end of the tube when it is mounted.  Is there a seal that should be an inch or two into the tube on the inward side of the bearings?  The car did not come with any seals, but that would not shock me.

It doesnt look like there is a seal in there, but there has to be or you'd know it.

How far in the tube is the seal?  There might be one on the retaining plate that bolts the axle to the tube, but I really do not think that I have a seal inside of the tube.  Everything else on this car was wrong when I got it, so seals missing would not be a big shocker.  I'll pull one of the axles this weekend and take a look.  With the lack of a working motor, it should free up my schedule a little.

there is a round axle seal at the end of the housing just before the area the bearings would ride once the axles were put back in.  The seal looks like a timing cover crank seal on a small block chevy.

From the outside in, the seal would be on the second step. First one is maybe 1/2 inch from the outside of the flange, second one about an inch from there. Black rubber coated metal ring...
