Title: rag on clutch master

the clutch master on my daughters car has a rag on it and i thought that there was a crack or bad seal but all the pics i have seen they have a rag on them. is this some thing every one does because they all leak. if i put a after market tank on it will this help or do they all do this. i have never seen this on any other race cars that have after market master cylinders.

The fluid comes out of the breather hole in the cap. Being brake fluid, it eats the paint away on the LF fender. The rag also prevents fluid from contacting the exhaust.
Alot of people do the same with the brake master.

does the after market ones not have the vent hole because i have been around lots of race cars (street stocks late models sprint cars) they have never had this probelm.

Since Legends are not built by Chevy, Toyota, Yamaha, technically  everything on them is aftermarket. That isn't a Yamaha reservoir.
The location close to paint is the issue. Any vented cap will lose a bit of fluid here and there. being 2" away from a fender is why people take the pre-caution of the rag.
You don't have to use it. Your master reservoir on full size cars does not have the limited mountimg area that the Legends have

if this is going to be a problem i will be using the rag. just thought if i could fix the poblem i would.

I also saw someone use one of those hitch ball covers over their clutch resevour.  The kinda rubbery plasticky ones.  I have been looking for one (but haven't found one yet) as it looks much nicer and slightly more professional than a rag and a zip-tie!

It looks nicer, but wont work as well unless they have the rag or something with absorbent qualities  underneath. The rag soaks up the fluid, where the trailer hitch ball cover would just re-direct the fluid a little further down to drip out.

We use clutch cylinders off an actual Celica (79), they are nearly identical, except the stub that sticks out is shorter AND the cap is a rubber cap that snaps in place, no leaks ever. the other nice thing is since the stub is shorter it does not get in the way when you pull the motor.

NAPA must be having issues today, that link isn't working either Steve.

Just make sure you follow lucky rule #13...

13. CLUTCH MASTER CYLINDER: The clutch master cylinder must remain stock, within the stock dimensions, location and configurations as currently delivered by U.S. Legend Cars International. The clutch master cylinder and reservoir must remain on the engine side of the firewall. No aftermarket clutch master cylinders are permitted. The clutch pedal may be shortened for driver comfort.


I'm sure most tech inspectors don't worry about that, but after witnessing tech at Nationals for the first time, I'd be leary of anything non stock appearing if going to a National event

I used black wrist bands..looks alot better than the red rag zip tied.  Once a year or so go to walmart etc and a few more
