Title: New Bearings
Post by: Winterracing on January 27, 2011, 09:56:22 pm
Hi,
I just replaced the bearings in my car and wanted to know if with use (a little breaking in) they will loosen up.  The new ones seem like there is more resistence then the old ones.

Thanks,
Dan

Properly cleaned and greased they should turn smooth. Yeah, they may seem tighter than your old ones... because they are not all worn out.

I think Dan is still talking about his wheel bearings.

Yes, I was talking about the front wheel bearings.  I know that the kart bearings always needed to break in so I'm assuming its the same with these car bearings.

You probable know that you need to tighten it down while spinning the wheel and then back it off to finger tight plus one castellation or till you get the cotter pin in. Just make sure you don’t have it to tight.

Did you replace the wheel seal? Most of the restriction is in the seal, new are tighter than old.

Dan,

Still going to tell you that these wheels are not going to still be spinning while you go drink a cup of coffee. Unlike your kart wheels, you have disc brake drag; the new seals and bearings, etc... Could you have over tightened them?... Perhaps. Regardless; The wheel is NOT going to spin a ton like your kart wheels. Go spin the front wheels on your street car. You are way over-thinking this whole front wheel thing.

I know that there not going to spin like my kart, they just seemed like the new bearings were tighter and harder to spin then the older ones were and i wasn't sure if they needed a practice session to break in like my kart bearings needed

I think that they will loosen up a little bit. The seal will soften up some.
But I don't think it will be dramatic.

I think more than anything its your grease, it will soften up as it warms during use.  New grease will add resistance when you try to spin it.  They do make some high performance wheel bearing greases that will spin very freely.  Like Steve said your bearings will free up a bit the first time you use them so you will have to check your spindle nut again.

That makes sense, do you recommend that I use this?  Or will my normal grease work when it warms up

I've always used Valvoline wheel bearing grease with moly in it. Never had an issue with a wheel bearing. Not very expensive either.
Still; Any wheel bearing grease should do the job. Just make sure to clean and repack them a few times a season.
